For under this price-point the GH-2 is the best deal going, at @ about $900 for a basic kit. What this camera has done though, is pretty much wipe the choices between spending $900 and spending $10,000-15,000 (what a RED Scarlet costs).

What was the camera used for the movie Bellflower? It made the colors vibrant but still looked a bit gritty. The look was really amazing.

The filmmaker basically built his camera, the lens mounting and such, around the SI2K which is a lot like this cam in several ways (now). I think he got ahold of a pre-release chip though because his setup used a spinning "ground glass" like 35mm adapters for video cameras where that's not necessary with something like a DSLR or the Black Magic. This is part of where the film's texture came from at times because, if I remember right, there were places in there where the ground glass wasn't spinning (he either forgot or the battery ran down, a danger with these types of setups because it's not always obvious and easy to lose track of).

I really thought the DIY and sometimes "dirty" quality of the Bellflower imagery really fit, while often times having that kind of spontaneous beauty you get that the super-pros can make happen and the rest of us hope are lucky enough to capture. It has that "beauty in decay" sorta grunge thing going for it. In some ways it reminded me of aspects of The Brown Bunny photography that I dug, only moreso.

Oh, and like the Black Magic camera (and RED) the SI2K captures way more information per frame than video cameras or even most DSLRs (closer to film negative). So its color correction could be pushed much further without falling apart. That's the reason why uncompressed is way more important than all these companies getting people excited about 4K. Removing compression is a far better way to spend bandwidth than just more pixels.

Oh, and to contrast with Bellflower, the SI2K was also used to shoot Slumdog Millionaire.

Check out eoshd.com for lots of info on the GH-2 (ironically enough, since it started out mostly devoted to Canon 5D I believe). Unlike the Canon DSLRs the Lumix actually has the internal processing horsepower to filter down the final HD image rather than just throw lines away.

Canon DSLR footage has to be processed to remove moire and other artifacts that are a result of its tacked-on video methodology and a lesser codec. In addition to stock, the GH-2 also had its firmware hot-rodded to more than double the bitrate recorded, meaning even higher quality original footage. In head-to-head shootouts it matches the $16,000 Canon C300 they recently released supposedly for the indie filmmaking market.

Don't get me wrong, you can get great looking footage with the Canon cameras too it's just, now, today, if you don't already have one there's very little reason to go that way. There are way better options that are cheaper and way better options for the same money. They dropped the ball. RED and Black Magic purposely designed their stuff so that folks who invested in a lot of Canon glass keep that investment intact.

I am guessing it was a special lens they used as well as maybe the type of film.

On Sick Boy I shot on a loaner Canon 7D. Free (or paid for by a production) is obviously better than having to fork over your own cash but there have been so many times I've wanted to test something out or try something on a whim, or go shoot an element that I can use in a visual effect I'm working on, augmenting synthetic with the organic, and without a good camera I'm stuck waiting, scrounging online or just making due without.

I've got a fully functional Redrock Micro M2 with a full spread of Nikon lenses but seriously mistimed investing in this setup at the end of the SD run (DVCAM FTL).

Not no more. GH2 on its way from Amazon/Samys as of today.

The cost has slid down a little lately such that they're now $859, with kit lens (14-42mm). That's the cheapest legit price I've ever seen for it with a lens. This lens will only be useful for daylight exteriors until I get something faster, but that's what I need right now anyhow. I can't really justify the F0.95 Nokton that I'm lusting over just yet. Once I get paid from this gig I'm working on now (a short film called The Push) I plan to get some anamorphic glass to play around with in the meantime and work on having this little guy (at least partially) fund a Black Magic when they're available this summer.

Toys can pay for toys, sometimes
