I was very impressed how these opening scenes faithfully recreate the atmosphere and tone of the original establishing it for the course of the film. It was always going to look more polished because of the bigger budget but regardless it captured the grimy look and mood of the first movie perfectly. Yeah, Elijah Wood's eyes look menacing and his narration was extremely creepy and unnerving, and just like Primetimeloser said the whole sequence just sets-up that this "maniac" is out there prowling and waiting for his next kill emphasizing that it could easily happen in the real world. A first kill in the first six minutes isn't any departure from what we are used to seeing in the slasher sub-genre. However, the way it was executed was perfectly timed. It was just so sudden and unexpected; I didn't see it coming at all. No gore but nevertheless it was very nasty.

Alex Aja directed one of the very best remakes in modern horror with THHE. It's much better than the dated but no less important Wes Craven original. I love 'High Tension' as well and 'Piranha' is a good time fun horror flick. Like most people though I wasn't too keen on 'Mirrors'.

I like the original a lot. It's not perfect but its power is rarely equaled in the slasher sub-gene.

Enter the Void, which the camera-work was clearly, uh, "inspired" by.

It's an intriguing concept but the directorial choice makes me very wary. Khalfoun's only other film, P2, was (co-)written and produced by Aja as well, and fell somewhere between serviceable and crap.

Well he was good in Sin City... You know that Norman Bates was actually supposed to be overweight and ugly but they went with Anthony Perkins who was the opposite. For Maniac, instead of a 'Norman Bates' type ala Anthony Perkins in Psycho, they went the opposite and cast an overweight, ugly dude (no offence to the late Joe Spinell). Now for the remake, they have gone back to the Anthony Perkins/Norman Bates type... Interesting.

I'm not a huge fan of Elijah Wood and the plot doesn't strike me as all that intriguing. Depending on reviews, I may check it out but will most likely pass.

The entire retro-80's score is on Spotify and it's awesome. If you dig on Giorgio Moroder, Goblin or any of the Italian, synthy composers from the '70s and '80s you should love it. In fact, I detected cues in there that have to be homage to Moroder's score from Cat People.

edit: I can't emphasize enough how mother fucking awesome the score is. Goosebumps at the phat, analog sound.

I've heard the clips that have been released and I'm digging it.

Definitely has the 80's horror flick vibe going on.

Release date for the film hopefully isn't too far off.

I can't really see how this could even suck a little. The original was awesome, and what I've seen thus far, looks equally brilliant. Plus they're using a p.o.v., which will be really different.

I can't stop listening to the soundtrack. I haven't been this excited about a score in I don't know when.
