Thought I'd share this other neat little extra with Saw fans, from the first movie's Special Edition.

I lost interest in the Saw films once Jigsaw was seen in flashbacks. I was more engaged with the character when his past was a little more murky and not such a clear cut reason for why he was doing the things that he was doing. The moment they shifted sympathy from the victims to the killer I lost interest. After being disappointed by Part 4, I've only watched the films for the traps and gore.

If you hated 2 and 3 then the rest of the series definitely isn't worth bothering with.

It dawned on me now that the first Saw is almost 10 years old already. Wonder if next October for the 10th anniversary we'll either get a new sequel, a reboot or a theatrical re-release. I have a hard time believing nothing will be done next year by the studio for the occasion.

I always liked the first and the third the best. If I have to pick my favorite, it's III.

Most fans usually cite those two as their favorites.

That's close to mine except 6 is in third place for me. Kinda surprised 6 isn't higher on some of these ranking, I think it was easily one of the best.

I can see them doing a 10th aniv bluray release of the set. Though anything else would be surprising. I started re-watching them recently and I found 1 much more enjoyable than before...it might actually change my order. I still havent watched 4-7 but I'll get that done soon enough and give a full list.

It's good you're watching the series in order because you definitely need to to understand the later sequels, otherwise you'll be lost.

Ever since the first movie came out, I have been a fanatic when it comes to Saw. I think it is a brilliant concept paired with brutal murder scenes that are sadistically intriguing.

Warning: these mini-write ups probably have spoilers
Saw 1:
The time that I first saw this movie was immediately after all the hype but before the sequels hit. I kind of knew what to expect and sort of held that against the film. After rewatching it a few times the movie has grown on me and is without a doubt a solid entry in the segment of films that ride the fine line between horror and thriller. Another great example would be Se7en, which inspired much of the original Saw. The ending has a great twist and throughout the film genuine tension is built using a minimalist film making style. I feel not enough credit goes towards how much movie James Wan was able to squeeze out of such a small budget. Overall a great movie and my favorite of the series. 8/10
Saw 2:
This movie begins the trend of upping the violence while diminishing the tension. It seems that the more despicable the death/torture the less the audience is connected. Sure gory deaths provide a reaction from the audience but so does a well constructed scene. The scenes with Jigsaw himself are the best, they provide more insight into his mind than most of the following movies with their backstory. While this chapter does have IMO the most interesting plot I can also see it as the beginning of the decline of the films...sadly happening after #2 is not what I would call a great run. 7/10
Saw 3:
Following the trend of more violent traps and less dramatic tension, this film has cast off all remaining thriller roots and gone for straight horror. While some may consider this a good thing I find it lacks the intensity of the other two. The characters in this film seem so lackluster and not as fleshed out as the two previous installments. I found myself caring less for the “main trap” and his quest. This one is where plausibility goes out the window and the Jigsaw character goes from an insane inventor to a some mastermind who knows what everyone will do and every reason for their choice. 5/10
Saw 4:
A conjoined mess, jumping forward and backward in the timeline throughout the movie interspersed with more violent porn torture than all of the previous films combined. This leaves the viewer disoriented and confused as to what's going on and who we should care about. There’s so much going on in this movie from Donnie Whalberg and the ice block to like 4 different cops being put through different tests to individual tests taking place throughout a whole big test with one of the cops, Jigsaw’s wife, some lawyer, the dirty cop, the whole film is needlessly complex. A complete mess of a plot, with nothing to add to the Jigsaw character despite how much they try to crowbar more backstory in. The audience doesn’t need the lost love, lost child, betrayed friend, and all the other bullshit they’ve added to explain Jigsaw’s madness. A pointless sequel that explained nothing and didn’t set anything up that couldn’t be done at the intro of the next film. 5/10
Saw 5:
The first thing I noticed in this installment is that the traps are less creative and more juvenile in this one. A pendulum? A number of people connected to the same device pulling them in? Didn’t we JUST see that in part 4? And the old crushing walls? Seriously? Also, I’m noticing a trend in these movies as they go on; it seems where previously they would introduce a character through exposition and get the audience to connect with them somewhat, now a bunch of people are introduced and each one is more unlikable than the next. The audience doesn’t care about any of these clowns and there’s no investment in their survival. The explanation and setup of previous films’ traps is pointless backtracking and seems to just rehash the series and try to remind the viewer of a time when these movies were good. At the end I honestly have no idea what was going on...I’m not sure who is who and who is alive or dead. This movie was just one big mess, it’s hard to believe that there could be anything redeeming in the next two movies. 3/10
Saw 6:
The aesthetics of this movie seem different, a little too clean and polished, however the straightforward plot is refreshing after the mess of the last two. The traps themselves in this one are more original as well and while they mainly serve as transitions from one plot explanation to another, their creativity is nothing to complain about. I rather enjoy the healthcare aspect of this chapter since I’ve had friends and family dicked over by similar systems, it’s a novel concept to put the put the insurance decision makers into a more visceral life or death scenario that they put their clients into. The ending was lackluster but in all a decent sequel to a dwindling franchise. 6/10
Saw 7/3D/The Final Chapter:
The main character has now been dead for the majority of the series. The story seemed to crawl along with no discernable direction and this “final chapter” should answer all the questions and bring closure to the series. Toss in some new detectives, sure why not, what’s another few unexplained characters? We have no attachment to them nor anyone else in the film. It seems where 6 was a step forward, this is a big stumble back. This isn’t some grand finale that fills in all the gaps, it’s just another story with a new batch of people we don’t care about. Though I will be honest the teeth pulling one had me squirming, that’s a personal mental torture of mine. In the end when it turns into a typical slasher chase through the police station with the large breasted blonde, the franchise fizzles out with a whimper. Gone are the grand illusion of life, choice, and survival, it has become just another slasher. Sadly, this is where the game ends. There isn’t going to be another Saw anytime soon, the final one was a boxoffice disappointment and as horror fans we all know that money is what finally ends a storyline. 4/10
Order:
Saw
Saw 2
Saw 6
Saw 3
Saw 4
Saw 7
Saw 5
The bottom line of this series in my opinion is that while it began as a low budget journey into the macabre, it progressed into major studio cash-in over the course of 2 sequels. What many film makers seem to miss is that where Saw 1 and 2 worked was the audience's connectuin with the characters that are being put through the tests and have those in the tests affected. By the time you get to the later entries, so many of the cast has been killed off and little to no time is put forward into character progression (with the exception of the 6th film).
