I am thinking of 'A Virgin Amongst the Living Dead' and 'The Beyond' when it comes to this cover art thingy.

Sharktopus is a masterpiece of horrible scifi films. "The Item" jumps to mind.

I first got into horror after I read Stephen King's Cujo. I didn't even know who he was at the time, but when the book was in paperback it was on a big book display with positive blurbs on its cover. I was getting bored of James Bond novels, so i read Cujo and loved it. Later i saw a Fangoria magazine in the store, with the headline `behind the scenes of Cujo'. Interested that they were making Cujo into a film, I bought the mag and read the article. I also read the other horror film articles. It happened to be around the time when my father was (finally) taking me to see R-rated movies - I was 13. I read more books, got my dad to take me to horror films, and it went on from there.
Interesting to hear from people whose mothers got them into horror. My mother tried hard to discourage me from horror (mostly movies), but it didn't work.

I think the movie that really got me into gore flicks is the remake of Hills Have Eyes. Before that, I was on and off with the horror genre. Believe it or not my grandparents are huge into horror and every time I went to their house they would have something on. My dad would also rent flicks all the time.

Nobody really. I remember travelling up north to see some family in liverpool when i was a kid. We stopped off at some services and salems lot was being shown and i was hooked!! Had a real problem with windows when i was a kid cause of a certain scene in that!! Also The first power did not help with a similar scene!!

For me, my old friend Julie and I would raid her parent's video collection and watch Sleep Away Camp, Nightmare On Elm Street and Halloween! It was only a short time before I was hooked on horror.

Accidentally woke up when I was around 5, went into the living room to get my mom and looked on the television set and saw the exorcist playing. It was right on the part when she turned her head all the way around and I screamed. It was the most terrifying thing i had ever seen. It was also the coolest thing I had ever seen, been hooked since.

I was 11 when i first saw that head-spin scene in The Exorcist. I didn't scream but i felt my heart jump into my throat and i looked away. I didn't even like horror movies then, that wasn't until 2 years later. I can't imagine being able to appreciate that movie at 5 years old.

No one introduced me, when I was a kid my family would go to rent movies at the video store every weekend. I would pass by the horror isle scared (I was 8 or 9). I became obsessed with the cover for the first A Nightmare On Elm St., older kids in my neighborhood would tell me all about Freddy and my curiosity just grew from there. My mother refused to rent horror films for me, but my dad was more laid back and rented me my first film which was Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.

I pretty much stumbled onto it as a little squirt with Godzilla movies on tv, and watching Creature Feature on Saturday afternoons. Stuff like that. But I also remember watching Halloween when it premiered on television late 70's. That and the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which gave me some sleepless nights. You know, 'cause my dad said there might be pods in my closet.
Probably the defining moment was when my dad took me to the drive-in to see The Texas Chainsaw Massacre when I was 12.

Nobody I guess. I just always had a predilection for horror movies as far back as I can remember. When you saw your first one, and how it made you feel... you knew you were hooked.

My earliest experience, that I can remember was in first grade,I would check out these orange books, each on a different monster like Dracula,King Kong and the Wolf Man from the library.
And then when we were finally able to get Cinemax, when I was around 9 the first two movies I watched were Fade to Black and Phantasm.
Joe Bob helped a lot along the way as well.

I'd mostly chalk it up to self-discovery although i did take some influence from my father who is more into sci-fi (Alien/Aliens had a big impact on me). Also at a very young age I shared a room with my brother who would watch Tales From the Darkside at night, I must have been only 3 years old at the time but i can still remember the feeling of dread that theme music put into me!
I recently began watching it again out of nostalgia, theme music is still creepy as hell but the episodes themselves aren't too scary. Still fun to watch stuff from your childhood and see how much your perception of things has changed.
NOES series also made a big impression on me growing up.
