This was Mexico's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category in this past Academy Awards. Miss Bala AKA Miss Bullet follows a young woman who (along with her friend) register for a local beauty pageant. Later that day, the girl follows her friend to some seedy bar hoping to get cozy with some people that could help them win the pageant. Unfortunately for them, the place almost immediately gets overrun by a group of heavily armed men that don't hesitate to mow everyone down. The girl somehow escapes but finds herself in debt to the men (especially after they get her into the pageant), and we follow her as she's forced to act out various tasks for these criminals, from smuggling to murder.
The flick gets into gear pretty early on and the tensity of it never really lets up until the credits roll. Mostly due in part to the fact that the director ALWAYS has the camera centered on the girl. It never leaves her side and it's always right there with her no matter what happens, so you really feel as though you're in this predicament with her. Added to the gritty look and realistic feel of everything and things can get pretty tense. If you like violent and realistic crime damas, then give this one a look 7/10
