I am a member of another Horror Forum and a person there created a 'Extreme Cinema Discussion Thread'.

On a personal level I felt this was a brilliant idea on that persons part. A place to discuss the films we love amongst peers there. Unfortunately the Human Condition got in the way, and like most things good there has the tendency to go south

I mentioned something about bringing on the gore, as one excited about a thread would, just to be told extreme is more then just gore My first thought was you don't say Sherlock

So, what are you feelings. These movies just send shivers of excitement down your spine or do you feel the need to intellectualize on the matter of what is the meaning of extreme?

Extreme is just a pretty word. I like it. Someones 'extreme' may not be the same as another.

When I did that thread my purpose was to get like minded people to discuss their films... Course things like F13 and NOES shouldn't be posted there and for the most part people 'got it'.

It's the internet, what do you expect.

Many here are confusing standard art-house trash and do-it-yourself hand-cam shit with extreme cinema. OP, how's about a precise definition? You are right of course being the internet, it is like Russian Roulette in that there is a good chance you will get a whole lot of like minded people who just love movies then you get a Heathen...I mean bullet...who just blows the back of the skull open of an good idea.

As for extreme it is a pretty word that is 'fun'...personally I thought it was well titled.

Being extreme doesn't mean necessarily delivering tons of blood. Well thought torture or well paced atmosphere/mood can be extreme in the right conditions. Some themes are extreme without the need of a lot of blood you know buddy (rape, padeohilia, necrophilia, zoophilia haha...)

Extreme......to me it is something that rips your brain out and makes your mind watch while it fucks the shit out of it...

the best extreme is one of those feelings that just makes your hole mind and body question what you "thought" was extreme before...

Extreme flicks are the ones that can truly still make me flinch and cringe...which is rare now a days...of course there are diff level extremes...tons of gore(always exciting) however i do like the extreme flicks that can make you watch it 3 or 4 times and still you ask what the fuck is going on in this moive...(if you can recommend some of these that would be great) I have not seen one in a long while!! Of course I though Clock Work was an amazing mind fuck flick...

For a film or even a book to be "extreme" doesn't necessarily have to reach an entire audience. A perfect example is the scene in Case 39 where the parents put their little girl in the oven, duct tape it shut and ignite it. As a father that scene was horrific to me, but to a younger audience or an audience without children it may not affect them as much.

For me that scene actually pushed some boundaries. To others it could simply be par for the course. However typically anything of this nature involving children always gets a gasp, as well it should.

Movies that rely on heavy gore just don't do it for me at this point. If a films main ploy is to supply viewers with buckets of blood and guts for the most part I will pass.

For me an extreme horror movie is one that makes me feel all cold inside, Not nescesarily scared. for example Martyrs was extreme for me bacause I was watching it and thinking man why am I still watching this fucked up movie. At the end I truly appreciated what the director acheived and being extreme was definately it.

Exactly Mac, the notion of limiting "extreme" to just blood guts and gore is honestly a bit childish. The scene you mentioned didn't bother me one bit (due to the reasons you stated) but it is not overly gory (as I recall you don't see anything beyond that). It's the personal connection and life the viewer lives that makes it that way.

Anything "extreme" would have to rely on the individual viewing the film. We all have a different level of what we consider extreme. Perhaps for online posting purposes the thread starter could define exactly what they are expecting from a post titled as such, but that seems a bit too limiting on those who may desire to post something within the thread.
For me, such things as rape, violence against children, and explicit visual violence cane be extreme - such as many seens from Hanger. That movie had a few things that my mind thought of as extreme...

Extreme can mean an emotion stimuli caused by a response to what has been viewed. Be it a deeply personal subject matter, a shocking action displayed on screen or something that truly courses the viewer to flinch.

But going back to what Wooden said it is in the end a pretty word to use to describe something that we all love here...movies.

Certain members over at that other board just like to troll. As far as extreme cinema goes, this isn't somethings others or myself came up with. If you do a google search under "Extreme, Shocking or Disturbing films" you will finds a shit load of lists on IMDB, Youtube and random sites around the net with same films listed. Many many years ago when I first started getting in this stuff I was part of disturbing film club on a website. This shit isn't new.
