It was Supermans first battle with supervillains, and the supervillains happened to be highly trained military men, so there's going to be a lot of destruction and fatalities. Superman had to take Zod down asap or there would've been a helluva lot more deaths. Superman seeing that family right in front off him made him fully aware of the carnage him and Zod had just caused the city and he knew the fight couldn't continue, so he made a difficult choice. Plus with all the destruction someone has to rebuild, and I think that's a good way to introduce a certain evil billionaire genious.

Yeah I ruined a fucking movie based on comments I made under the fake name choptop2.

Look you can still enjoy the movie and over all I enjoyed the movie, but by the end I expected Viggo Mortensen to come pushing his shopping buggy. It just looked grim, Metropolis was a crater. But it's alright cause Perry white saved that one intern. This is pretty standard in disaster porn. We're only suppose to care about the few with screentime and not the millions that die in the huge fx shots of buildings crashing. I know collateral damage is a staple of the super hero genre , but fuck this one was just ridiculous.

It was audience manipulation. It was putting a face on a few after obliterating millions, we're guided by the filmmakers not to care about. Now as an audience we know we have to care about these people cause they're getting closeups. It felt cheap. This is what breaks Superman? He should have been feeling that rage immediately after smallville.

Like I said before collateral damage is nothing new in action movies or superhero movies. But this movie took it nearly to a point of parody and unlike all those other films this one has a Protagonist that could have ended it all right away.

Hey if it worked for you, great! It kinda took me out of the movie. The world keeps turning.

Ultimately it all depends on how they acknowledge the destruction in the sequel, for future battles I'd like to see Superman making the effort to moving the fights away from crowded areas, and seeing Lex exploit the negative ramifications of the first films ending battles. If they choose to ignore it and say the city just moved on like it was nothing, than I will agree that the destruction was a little excessive.
And he was not nearly skilled enough to take Zod and the others down quickly, he tried in Smallville and got his ass kicked.

Caught the flick earlier--liked it. I think my favorite part of the film was all the origin stuff; seeing Clark learn about himself and his powers. Last hour or so offered some good action, and for a superhero flick there were some really visually stunning scenes. Overall a 7/10 (but a high 7).

Seeing other useres thoughts on the movie I can now relate to the necessity of Clark destroying everything and not quite understanding the consequences of going full Kryptonian in a largely populated area in his first real fight ever.I guess my complaint isn't pointed at this DCMU but at Nolan Snyder and Goyer for creating this hyper-realism with everything having it's own "how and why" while leaving the aftermath of a very important part in movie's human history sort of on a light tone and sort of forcing a happy ending when the motherfucking Alien Apocalypse almost happend.(Does this make sence to anyone?)Altough this a perfect set up for that one evil bald guy that has a thing for hating on Superman.

    Watched it today 7/10

The destruction bothered me a bit. Knowing that thousands of people perished only added to the ego of Zod. I liked that aspect, but didn't get as angry about it as some people did. Some people were angry that only a select few were given camera time, but it's a movie. Thousands of people died and some survived. This is the story of the people that survived. In the DC Universe, there are superheroes that come from outer space. It's not difficult to wrap your mind around aliens leveling an entire city to do their evil bidding. Sure thousands of people had died and the movie ended on a light note, but would you rather it be depressing and leave the viewer with a bad taste in their mouth? It's gotta end on a high note, because it's Superman. He's the image in this film that everything will be alright. Plus there was only a few scenes after the destruction, I'm sure it was a little while after everything had happened. You don't know, no one does, so no reason to bitch about it. It's a superhero film, these things happen. Plus it leaves a great opening for the sequel.

Also, read about all the easter eggs and there is some cool stuff thrown in.

While back I saw this a second time and I actually fell alseep in the theater. I doubt the sequel will answer any question because its really a backdoor sequel to Batman. Once again the superman reboot received a wave of meh reactions and earned far less than the last two batman sequels.

Superman is going to be the second banana in his own franchise.

That is exactly what happened to Batman in Nolan's series. Hell you Barely saw him as Batman through most of it.

People complain about the destruction (myself included) but the more I think about it the more I feel like that is how it was meant to be. More so how it should of been. The entire movie is about him suppressing his abilities and then at some point has to go all out. There are bound to be problems with this and causalities. Also this is a great set up for batman to come in and teach the all powerful alien some humility.

It has 56% at rotten tomatoes and made less than 300 million domestically on a 220 million budget. Thats why the bat will be in the next one.

I liked it. I hope with the sequel they address the destruction at the end and how Superman couldn't save everyone, which could haunt him, making him vulnerable in that way.

the movie wasn't terrible, it was just...meh. Certainly better than Return of Superman but that's not saying much.

So the audience gave it a C? C's look kinda meh on a report card.

Also everyone is giving Zack Snyder too much credit thinking he'll address the disaster porn. Snyder is a Style over Substance director. He destroyed everything cause it looked cool. His idea of Substance was having a picture of JESUS CHRIST sit over Clark Kent's Shoulder. For those that couldn't tell Clark was sitting in a church, Subtle.

When I was younger I was a fan of the original Superman series that Christopher Reaves was in before I knew much about the comics and how much the films were messing up. I then of course shifted to Batman as I am a DC guy through and through. I watched Man Of Steel last night for the first time and I gave it a 10 out of 10 here, something I think I have only done for a few other films. I do not have 1 bad thing to say about this film. So many people are mad because of how it ended, why? Would they have preferred that Cal let Zod live and kill that family and whoever else he wanted to? Zod was a fucking beast and needed to be stopped, even Cal felt horrible about it. I am watching it again as we speak and I am actually beginning to see Zod as less of a villain and more of someone who just wanted his home back. He was Jorell's friend and as everyone saw he killed him out of anger because he felt betrayed. There are many ways to lok at this but I am glad they made it right and open for interpretation.
