Complaints about the destruction strike me as odd considering I don't think I've ever read a single similar complaint about The Avengers. They address it with some of Joss Whedon's laziest writing in that awful S.H.I.E.L.D. show but Loki getting a bitch-slap in the new Thor seems to imply leveling a city is just a punchline in the Marvel Universe.

Massive destruction of cities (and with that the deaths of hundreds of thousands, at the very, very least) is an almost paramount component to any alien invasion film. It's the sole reason for seeing the Transformers franchise, any kaiju film, etc. It's just a weird criticism to have. Really, really weird.

and above all it is a superhero film. If anyone remembers the original Superman 2 there was a lot of destruction in the Zod/Superman fights and no one complained. With the technology available today and having 2 super-strength mega beasts fighting one another did they expect them to be mindful of their surroundings in terms of taking it easy? I think not!

On a side note there are now rumors that in the sequel Brian Cranston might be playing Lex Luthor.

Pretty good article on why the more light-hearted Marvel movies out shine DC's more serious Superman.

Letting things be a bit more cheerful worked for Marvel, and it would work for DC too. The two companies’ attitudes can be quite nicely summarised by having a look at two of their upcoming films: DC’s Man of Steel was criticised for being too dark, and the solution to this problem apparently involves putting the Dark Knight himself in the sequel. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is going to have a main character called Rocket Raccoon.

I like the serious tone they take with these films. I don't know why. I like Marvel for having insane plots, taken right from the comics, and DC for making their superheroes more down to Earth. That was a funny as hell video though.

I think it depends on the character. Batman is great as realistic and gritty, that same would work with The Punisher on the Marvel side. I think if Supes was more "Iron Man" and less "Dark Knight" it would have worked a little better. Like I said previously in this topic, Man of Steel wasn't bad, it was just not great.

agreed. Probably why I liked Dark Knight over Man of Steel. I liked Man of Steel, but for some reason just couldn't get into it. Snyder has done much better work.

That video was so fucking funny "and ships shaped like wangs. Meet General Zod, a Cryptonian out to destroy humanity with the power of dubstep!"

I love how DC does their films because Marvel movies are just way too generic for me and I love the darker atmosphere so much more than the fake ass Beaver Cleaver shit that goes on in Marvel films.

It's been sitting in my DVR for awhile now just never got around to watching it. While I didn't exactly hate the movie I didn't love it either. Henry Cavill is the best part of this film he is quite awesome in the role and has some good development as a character. But everyone else? nothing much is done with them honestly. What was this kiss about? I don't know him and Lois Lane had zero chemistry and no inkling of any relationship happening. It didn't make any sense at all. The relationship between Clark and his step dad? it's all generic preachy nonsense all the scenes between him and Clark are basically the same there is no real conversation between them, no feel for his home life. The tornado scene was ridiculous as hell who thought that would be a good idea?

The film has some good points but it often just seems like a lot of scenes jumbled together with stuff just kinda happening. When the film starts it already feels like you're in the middle of a movie that is just starting to wrap up. Clark is born, Krypton is about to blow up and oh Zod is trying to take over the world and then boom. Instead of trying to give us any reason to care about the fate of Krypton it's mostly just stuff blowing up and people shooting at each other. Why is it such a big deal that Kal El had a natural birth or however his father put it? why did Zod make such a big deal out of it? wasn't clearly explained. Sometimes it felt like two people directing the movie, one is telling an interesting story about an alien trying to discover himself and what it is to be a human the other wants to completely destroy everything. But the flashback scenes are done in such an awkward way there is no flow them. Sometimes he is younger, sometimes he is older. A more natural flow showing him slowly age would have worked much better I think.

The action was spectacular up to a point. After the world engine is destroyed it just seems to keep going and going and gets rather repetitive. I really wanted to love this film much more than I did there is an awesome movie in here wanting to break out. It could have used much better editing and giving us more of a reason to care about the rest of the characters besides Superman. I give the movie a 6
