I caught the international cut of this film recently and thought it was pretty damn good. It's based on a true story and follows several groups of tribesmen from a small village that are forced to fend against the invading Japanese military. The film is so long (4 1/2) that it's actually split into 2 parts.
The first part depicts the life of the tribes and the start of the invasion. They're eventually forced to surrender to the Japanese, so it details the changes of the people as they learn to adapt to their new leaders and surroundings. The first part of the film was brilliant, offering great character and story development and despite being 2 1/2 hours, always remains at a good pace. On it's own I'd give it an 8/10.
The second part focuses on the uprising of the people and the fight to reclaim their land. As good as it was, there are some parts where it does drag and there were some scenes that I wasn't too keen of, but it's apparently what really happened, so I guess the filmmakers wanted to be somewhat historically accurate. It's just sad to see how certain things turned out. There's also a couple scenes that didn't quite make much sense to me, but I digress. Though not as strong as the first part, it does pick up greatly in the last hour-or-so, when the final battle commences. The second part gets an 7/10 from me.
Overall, this is a really enjoyable flick with some great character and story development and it doesn't shy away from blood and gore, especially since these tribesman are headhunters. I think this is probably the most decapitations I've ever witnessed on film The movie as a whole gets a 7/10 from me
