    Where now for Horror.

Well the title is the question, through the 70's it was teenage massacres, 80s zombies and the 90s was mainly slasher teen movies. I am not sure where horror is to go next in order to keep building new audiences it looks as though were coming to the end of the Haunted house phase. Which direction do you think cinema should take horror?

I was thinking seeing as its been in the news lately we need to move towards cannibal movies as they will scare people because of the recent real cases. or is it time for hollywood to back off and let small studios get the genre back on track. what do you think?

Mainstream horror sucks and will forever suck, because all studios do is go with what has worked in the past and hope to recreate it for future success. We have to rely on the indie and foreign productions for good horror now

Well that killed that conversation. So do you guys have any ideas on what is needed within the genre other than get hollywood out as you rightly say because big studio's corporate backed are shit.

Guys, I'll say it until I'm dead, lol. If I can ever get the support, I'll crank out plenty of films for you. I love making movies. It's extremely hard work, but the reward of entertaining people is worth it to me.

What do we need? Movies with real scripts (and acting if possible)

No more prequels, sequels or remakes. People have to focs on searching ideas. One can only find ideas by looking for them...

I am hearing you guys, I really am. Threadkiller was nice enough to turn me on to an option for funding. I'm going to look into it.

Seriously guys, I want to make horror. I totally agree with having good stories/writing and good acting. Hell, everything needs to be good to have a good film. The score, spfx, picture quality, etc. But everyone please try to understand that it does take money to do it.

I believe in the crowd funding approach. Of course some may feel that there are those who will abuse it just to get some money for the hell of it. I'm not sure about those types, I can only (and will only) account for myself. If I raise money...it goes to the film. I know there has to be thousands of horror fans who can pitch in. I'm not requiring millions. Thousands? Yes. When you find good people to work with you, they require payment; and if they're good at what they do, they deserve it. It's a living for us, not a hobby.

I have already proven I can finish a film. Gun Town was my first. Yeah, it has flaws, yeah it could have been better; but with a budget of only 8K, I think we did alright considering. At least it was shot in hi-def!

Anyway, I'm rambling, but I do it to reach out to everyone. I currently have a complete, ready to shoot script for Gun Town II: Timeline. We're shooting a teaser soon to promote it for crowd funding. We will require a much bigger budget, but it is needed. I want to hire good actors who have enthusiasm about working on set. I'm not the kind of guy who will just go out and find whoever wants to "be in the movies" and hand them a script. I want good SPFX and have 2 people to do it. I want good props, and can get them. There will be blood, guts, gunfire, stunts, etc. These things cost money. It's too hard to just be "creative". It just is.

Give me a chance guys. In addition to GT2T I am in progress of writing a road horror script. It's coming along quite nicely. I have ideas, I want to share them with you on film.

    Thanks for reading.

I understand your words. Be sure you have my sympathy (well, I know it's not very useful actually...).

You tell us it takes money. Some things need money: actors, SFX... Ideas don't need money to be found. It needs the will to find some and that's why scenarists should look for.

I'm a musician and it happened sometimes that I wasn't inspired to compose. The fact is that when it happened I focused on concentration and the will to get ideas. It took some time but I ended up finding useful deias for riffs because I really put energy in this search. I throwed away a lot of lyrics and riffsand looked for better ones.

The problem is that Hollywood didn't get that so far... lazy bastards!

Wish you the best luck possible.

I'm conscious though that some ideas are way to expensive to be put on screen unfortunately. But I think there are ideas that are cheap and easily used for movies.

A Swedish student movie called "The cellar" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1105281/) was made for about 10 000 bucks. It's not perfect but way better than some professionnal movies.

Hope you will be able to keep on doing what you love.

It's true that if not for foreign horror there wouldn't be a lot worth watching lately. Hollywood does come through on rare occasion, Cabin in the Woods being one instance, it wasn't without its flaws but damn i can't remember the last time i had that much fun at the theatre. Really hope there is more where that came from.

The problem is that no one is willing to fund or greenlight anything anymore unless it's guaranteed to make gugillions of dollars. This is the death of creativity. Hence the endless remakes milking revenue out of established fanbases. They also always go for the PG-13 rating to appeal to a broader audience, again all about the $$$$, so we end up with watered down pieces of crap instead of a potentially decent horror flick.

To answer the original question, I would like to see an end to the cookie cutter formulaic clones that have been coming out and see something truly original. We need a new icon with the kind of imagination that went into the original NOES, Hellraiser, Halloween, etc. I love the mythology that was created with the older movies, a sense that there was so much more going on than what was given to you in the movies themselves.

Bingo...Yahtzee...we have a winner! You are correct.

Difficult, but it can be done. I sincerely feel that my friends movie will accomplish just that. "The Lashman" is due out soon.

True, very true. It depends on what the script entails. I started writing a script once. It was a zombie/action film I called "Devil of the Dead" I got 45 pages into it and realized one thing right away. It was going to take at least a half a million bucks to make it. There is no way I can raise that kind of money. I would have need a thousand extras, vehicles I could wreck, a shit ton of make up and spfx, closing off four square blocks of a city at a time, the list goes on.

I'm trying to stick to more simple ideas.

I agree with Fright. Mainstream horror sucks and always has. Of course a few good things have come out, but not enough. Cannibal movies will never work. It's too big of a taboo and always will be. Although I would love to see a new, GOOD cannibal movie.Let the small studios have a chance and come out with an original idea. That's what we need. Like someone mentioned no more of these shitty remakes, sequels and prequels. It's laziness on our part. Also since these big studios don't want to give money to any one with an original idea. Money, money, money. Let's continue to steal ideas from foreign movies and make them into shitty American remakes.

But one other part of the problem is that it's a fucking hell of a difficult task here in Europe to raise funds for a horror movie. People directing horror movies aren't really respected or appreciated and it's hard for them to find some money. This explains why some SFX suck so much ("The horde" for example and it's awful fake blood at the end of the movie)

It's frustrating to notice how hard it is to give life to ambitious horror movies. Most of the time, French directors can only raise between 2 and 4 millions for their movies. No more.
