Well, we have some great movies but we did some awful movies too. The sad reality is that we produce more horrible movies than great movies.
It's a living hell to create horror movies here but at least they have artistic freedom and this is why some directors don't want to go to Hollywood or come back home quick.

Lower budgets require more creative effort. I like my horror to be unsettling. Big budget remakes such as The Fog and Prom Night are big heaping bowls of sugary garbage, then on the other side, the indie/underground side seems to serve up gross for the sake of being gross. Take 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' '74. Not sugary at all, yet not viscerally gross and disgusting either. The sweet spot for me. There is room for the blood buckets, but it needs a point to it. Even 'House of the Devil' works for me. While not great, and I understand it's a snoozefest for many, it was again, unsettling. A movie like 'Hatchet' is ridiculous, but had me laughing because it's essentially lampooning the genre.
I have trouble finding that formula nowadays. It may be out there somewhere, but there's a lot of garbage to sift through, Hollywood or underground.

Many movies of course.
I'm talking about professionnal movies with expensive crew and so on. Just imagine what you could do with the wages/salary of Tom Cruise...

Hollywood should with their big budgets do creature features. Most will suck but there is the chance of a few gems amongst the shit.

First time my knife touched skin
And the red blood started flowing so quick I just couldn't quit
Kept stabbing until everything that I seen was red
The pillow, the blankets, the walls, and even the bed
One color dominating everything like contemporary art
Am I the killer or artist with bloody heart?
Then I curled into a ball in the corner of the room
Feeling like a creep in the light of the moon
"Congrats to GetSome for Winning UHM Fantasy Basketball"

What I think would be intersting. The smart and sexy female killer. I do not want a crazy bitch going around and killing people. What may be more intersting. a deep thinking female killer. I am not really interested in killing like 20 plus all the time. I am not interested in all the fake blood. What about a female killer that only kills only a few people. But, you know there is a killer out there and your not even thinking it is a woman in the first place. She runs and hides with the other women to build their trust. Then, she takes them out.

Underground/Independent Film makers have proven them selves of a vast number of different genres within horror...from Creature Features to the Mask Killer/Slasher Genre.
As for foreign movies amazing films have came out off Europe and Asia.
The weakness in Hollywood is the need to make tremendous amounts of money due to their high cost in making movies. What they need is a new spurt directors such as John Carpenter to arrive on the scene who are not afraid to do things differently. Unfortunately I do not see this ever truly happening again.
But then who knows.

But 99% of the low budget/ Indi movies look like shit and Hurt the 1% that doesnt. Too many UG directors worry about the shock before the storyline, cinematography or direction and it makes the product look like shit.
Now. On the flipside, I agree mainstream Is down... But you do get a gem every once in... Cabin in the woods is mainstream... But yet it's meta critic score and Imdb score are high, and it is an excellent movie

Obviously, but no offense Splat, you haven't seen too many non-underground horror films. If there have been good flicks out there that came from Hollywood, I doubt you saw them. This isn't a personal attack on you in any way, but from your past posts it's clear that you don't really know anything outside of the underground genre. Like you just jumped into it or something. I may be wrong, but honestly how many big named horror flicks have you really watched besides just took other people's word for it?
There have been some fantastic movies to come out of Hollywood in the last ten years. Some movies off the top of my head would be; Cabin in the Woods, The Descent, 28 Days Later/Weeks, Shaun of the Dead, Hostel..ect. Sure personal opinion of these movies are mixed, but at least they have balls. I know a lot of people who hate Hostel, but that doesn't change the fact that it was a brutal ass movie to put in theaters. Cabin in the Woods was extremely violent as well and that fucker is sitting at a 7.8/10 on IMDB.
I'm not saying every horror film to hit a theater is fantastic, but we shouldn't give up on them entirely. There have been some great flicks that probably have been missed because all people do is take others word for it. The Rite, with Anthony Hopkins, was not a bad flick at all. For PG-13 I'd say it's probably one of the best possession films out there next to Exorcist. Despite what you think about Grindhouse (Planet Terror and Death Proof), those were some ballsy movies to put in theaters. Even putting it out there as a Grindhouse instead of individually hurt what money they could have received, but did it anyway. I know a SHIT ton of people who refused to go see the flicks, but when I show them on dvd they love it. Go out there and see for yourself because not everything that comes to theater is absolutely shit. Fright or any other reviewer might make a review for something calling a movie awful, but YOU might go out there and think the movie is fantastic.
I'm trailing off a bit, but I think the point still stands that, while not all hollywood movies are masterpieces, there are still some that you should go out and see. Maybe the ideas aren't all that original or it might have CGI blood, but there still could be some aspects that you like. It's like saying, "Oh Metallica is shit live now compared to 1984!" Well, no shit, that was 30 fucking years ago. Same thing goes for horror flicks in my opinion. "Horror flicks aren't as good as they used to be!" Well..times change. Companies are still as greedy as ever.
I personally think that with the recent decade of popular horror franchises like Saw and PA, that horror flicks are going to make a splash in the mainstream again. Sure they might not all be amazing, but there might be a gem or two that could slip through the cracks. We just need to have some ballsy people behind the camera.

Excellent point, I must say DM. I'm always interested in what you post about horror films.
I will always give horror movies a chance. I get shit from some cuz I'll always watch 'newer' films.
I liked The Rite alot, not perfect but still a good watch. I will not watch PA movies because its not my style. I just don't like those type of movies.
Well when its all said and done....I just love the excitement it brings to me when a movie is labeled, HORROR
