That's pretty strange. Something like this seems like it'd be PG-13 from the start.

I guess the producers weren't confident enough in the film to risk the R rating

PG-13? That's bullshit. I kind of liked that redband trailer awhile back.

Nevermind, this explains why it was said to be PG-13 before

Collider snagged exclusive word of the rating confirmation, after rumors of Paramount testing both PG-13 and R-rated versions of the film began to surface on the Internet. According to Collider, their sources refute the dual testing rumor, stating that both versions of Witch Hunters shown to test audiences were Rated R, which is how the studio supposedly plans to release the film. The only difference in the two cuts is said to have been the severity of the gore and violence – which could account for the mistaken impression about the rating.

Overall, the movie reportedly tested favorably, with audiences enjoying its off-kilter sense of humor and combination of solid action and graphic violence. Tarantino-esque, indeed. Right now, all we have is the previously-released image of Renner and Arterton in costume to share, but with the January release date on the horizon, trailers, posters and more promotional materials should start dropping soon – and don’t be surprised if they play up the film’s pulpy, violent nature (if these latest reports are to be believed).

Not sure which version I saw at this point after reading that. To be honest, it doesn't matter...the movie BLOWS. Also, don't bet on this being better than Van Helsing...it's very, very close.

    Tarantino-esque...really? Wow.

Also why the hell did it take them so long to decide? Mostly everywhere you look...even now it still says PG-13, including IMDB.

Wondering the same thing myself. The studio supposedly always intended on releasing it rated R, but if that were the case then why show 2 cuts? And why take so long to finally get a rating?

Make-up looks weak in the latest Fangoria, unfortunately. Hopefully it looks better in the running film than what the publicity stills imply.

It doesn't. Plus it's topped off with terrible CGI.

Yep, sounds about right, like Van Helsing. Horror movies just aren't going to get a lot of quality CGI unfortunately.

First time my knife touched skin
And the red blood started flowing so quick I just couldn't quit
Kept stabbing until everything that I seen was red
The pillow, the blankets, the walls, and even the bed
One color dominating everything like contemporary art
Am I the killer or artist with bloody heart?
Then I curled into a ball in the corner of the room
Feeling like a creep in the light of the moon

The movie was witheld from the usual reviewing party (bad sign), however Rotten Tomatoes has reviews trickling in now...all negative. Interestingly enough they all point out the shortcomings I have pointed out. This movie just isn't good. I also never noticed that Will Ferrell is a producer on this

I pulled this from one of the reviews which is spot on:

"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" is disappointing for a number of reasons, not the least being its squelching of the promise it held at the start, but one thing the film does not do is overstay its welcome. If there was ever any development or exploration into the relationship between its title brother and sister, director Tommy Wirkola has shaved it down to a few moments of teasing and playful nudging. Otherwise, they have no time to do much more than spit out one-liners while fighting various witches to the death. After a while, the incessant chasing and battling—not to mention the movie's random woodsy settings and unpronounced special effects—begin to resemble less a big-budget action picture and more a cheesy, "Xena"-style small screen fantasy from the mid-'90s. It's really rather surprising that Lucy Lawless never shows up.
