I just recently watched Silence of the Lambs and Se7en with my young nephews and it was interesting to see the difference in their reactions to the villians. One found John Doe "super scary" as he put it but Hannibal Lecter seemed to not bother him at all. The other one was blown away by H Lecter and didn't care for John Doe. Made me think of these two characters and question who was the more disturbing. Both are intelligent, financially secure, and wickedly insane. I think John Doe scares me a little more. He has an ability to inflict cruel torture remorselessly. No compassion at all....almost like a machine, where HL is a murderous cannibal, but is more likeable which makes him less threatening to me in some way.
