The Dead Hate The Living (fulci comparison)

    the-dead-hate-the-living-dvd.jpg
I'm not huge on Fullmoon.. where they have several solid flicks, I feel they've done a lot of trash as well.
Last night I watched The Dead Hate The Living.
I don't know why, but by preference, I specifically do not like movies about a horror movie production, it just feels so cheap..
This flick wasn't terrible. It was a bit slow, doesn't really deliver with any effects or anything. Just a mediocre fullmoon flick I'd say, BUT, allow me to draw this comparison.. I'll describe more aswell

    Spoiler...
The movie is a zombie flick, about a horror crew shooting a zombie movie in an abandoned hospital.
They find a giant Gateway that allows the dead to come and attack them. They all around the hospital and do stupid shit, and then the film ends with the 2 main characters entering the portal, as they can not seem to return to the real world. They enter the portal and are in a world of the dead that is bleak and dark. cue credits

    Spoiler...
The Beyond is a zombie movie about a house with a portal in the basement, allowing the dead to enter the house. And the film ends with the 2 main characters entering the portal and "and you will face the sea of darkness and all there in that may be explored". The 2 main characters are stuck in this bleak and dark place. cue credits

    Spoiler...
Both zombie films about a gateway or portal, both with the same ending.

Perhaps Fullmoon hadn't seen The Beyond you may say? There are 2 Direct references to Fulci in The Dead Hate The Living.. the one character even has a Fulci Lives sticker on his bumper.
Am I the only one that feels this is incredibly cheap.
2 'similar' films, one an epic horror classic, and another a run of the mill stereotypical shit flick..

Sometimes imitation isn't the best form of flattery..
    Ok Savini.. very unique

Solid observation and I agree....Full Moon is consistant when it comes to sub-par horror films...case in point the subject of your thread. Not sure of the solid films you say they're responsible for....then again I haven't seen all of them (70%) As a long time zombie film fan I was very disappointed with this flick as I was with The Beyond (that spider scene )

Guess my standards are high being a huge fan of Romero's Dead Trilogy....thank God for
    The Walking Dead

I was semi-friends with the director since we spoke a lot through email and he sent me an advanced copy to review. I think UHM was one of the first to post a review for it online, so it was thanked in the "Special Thanks" part of the credits at the end

I'm not necessarily bashing the film, it wasn't a bad film, but I wouldn't rate it higher than average.
although in recollection and comparison, doesn't seem to have much originality..

I remember buying this not long after it was initially released, based totally on the cover and reading it was a true indie horror flick. This was about the time my brother and I were producing our first independent feature and so I was going out of my way to try and support other indies where I could. I'm betting that Full Moon acquired this and didn't actually produce it.

I could tell that it was made for practically nothing, but could tell that the filmmaker was an actual horror fan, not someone trying to make a buck off horror fans (ie. The Asylum). It was a fun enough little flick so I didn't feel cheated. It was also fairly consistent in its overall presentation so I was actually able to enjoy it for what it was even more than other low budget indie fair that I've taken a chance on since (like Dead Birds and Boo, both of which had much bigger budgets and experience in front of and behind their cameras).

As for the film-within-a-film aspect, it helps to view this with the perspective of the time it was made. This level of self-reference was still considered sorta clever and edgy. It was near the peak of this style of narrative's popularity.

This is basically how I feel about it... You could tell the person who made it is a tried and true horror fan.

Land is shit. Period. The best part about Land is when I saw it in the theater everyone else seemed to be very disappointed in it as well and people started mimicking Big Daddy's groans. That was actually quite funny.

I think any self respecting Romeroite doesn't count anything from Land on, because then it opens up huge holes in their argument that Romero is still god....

As for Land of the Dead, even though not as good as the original trilogy I still like it.
