This is a gore flick from the director of Das Komabrutale Duell, an absurd splatter fest.
This is Heiko Fipper's earlier movie, although I do believe an alternate title for the film is Das Komabrutale Snuff-Massaker.
It shot cheaply and crudely, although I see some definite attempts at style in some scenes.
It's a German movie, I only know of one limited DVD release, and there is no existing release with subtitles.
If you're going to be watching a foreign movie without subtitles, then this is a good flick to watch deaf, because there's not a whole lot going on in terms of plot.
Well atleast there didn't seem to be much going on besides people being killed. And even though the DVD release labels it as the Director's Snuff Cut, and that the film isn't heavy in plot, it doesn't come off like other marketed Faux snuff movies, in that they are actively hyping their movies as 'sick', 'disturbing', 'twisted'; this film is much more light-hearted. Yes graphic acts are performed, however remaining realistic (somewhat), the scenes aren't trying to 'shock' anyone with their dark film editing (lol), they're shot like any other horror flick, and as I said there are some interesting shots implemented.
This movie is nowhere near as gory as Das Komabrutale Duell's insanity, in which gangs are in a never ending war, and people are actually put back together with tape and screws and sent back out to attack. 'Das' although much more violent, doesn't come off as serious or as shocking as Ostermontag, it's much more comical.
So if you're interested in a fun splatter fest, perhaps check out Unearth's release of Das Komabrutale Duell, which is subtitled. If you like that and are looking for more fun, Ostermontag probably won't dissapoint you. Or if you think that you are more interested in a less comical movie that still delivers with brutality, then Ostermontag should be good for you. Honestly, I like them both for what they are, and perhaps one day there'll be a subtitled edition available.
I definitely require another viewing on each.
