    You, the horror fan

Horror fans are very unique in the movie community. We always share vastly different opinions toward films than most others do, we've all seen movies that many have never even heard mentioned and we also have to deal with a slew of truly mediocre films (seemingly more-so than any other genre). I was reflecting today and remembered a period of time where I really stepped away from watching films of the genre. I thought maybe my taste was changing and I was getting bored of the genre. In a way I was but it was not because my taste was changing, it was simply that I was losing faith in the genre. All movies seemed to become redundant and nothing felt new, fresh or exciting. This is when I came across The Descent. About a year before it was released in North America, I watched it on my computer. The movie truly just drew me in and left my salivating about the genre once again.

Rather than discuss the film itself, i'm wondering if any of you guys have stepped back or gone through a lull, in which you watched something new that totally re-invigorated the genre for you. If so, what was it?

Times are looking grim these days - holding onto everything - it's hard to draw the line. I, am hiding in this empty space, tortured by my memories of what i've left behind

Happens to me all the time where I go through a period where I may not watch a single horror film for weeks. It's not that I've given up on the genre or anything, I just wasn't in the mood for it, nor did I find anything worth watching. Lately that's changed since some decent watches and hidden gems have crept up on me, but I'm sure I'll have another period next year where I won't watch anything from the genre for a while.

Not really. I have some European movies on DVD so I can have my breath of fresh air if I need it.

I'm not expecting tons of awesome movies per year so it's easier for me not being disappointed and frustrated I suppose.

Most definitely. Before October there were a few months I didn't watch anything horror related. Got sucked into some television series like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad. I love horror, but I'm not the type of person to watch horror flicks over and over and over again, unless I am introducing friends to some flicks. Some horror flicks nowadays just aren't good as they used to be

I also go through periods where I don't watch horror flicks for a while. Sometimes for a short period of time, sometimes for a long period of time. All of which really just depends on my mood. I go through "phases" actually, where I watch a certain niche of movies for a period of time. For a while, I was on a Korean/Asian cinema phase. Next month it might be something totally different. I even go through phases where I just watch the same film over and over and over again. This usually happens when I stand in front of my huge collection of DVDs/Blu-ray for at least 20+ minutes. If I can't find anything I want to watch or not in the mood to watch, I just pick out the same movie I watched the day before, last week, last month, etc. A big problem having a huge collection in my opinion.

As far as "new" horror flicks go, I always still have faith that a few titles will come out each year that will still keep the genre alive. I will not deny that some of the horror flicks hitting theatres today have been totally shit, but others have really surprised me. I rarely go to the theatres anymore, but every once in a while, a film comes out that really gathers interest. Right now, it's "Sinister." It might not look like much, but I always loved the supernatural element to horror flicks. Granted, you can't always take this for granted, but a good rating on IMDb can also reassure me. If it's just a few hundred ratings, that's not enough to make me want to see it. But when it's a few thousand, then I give it a consideration. I will definitely see this movie in theatres!

I think we can all agree that there is some time in our lives that we just don't feel like watching horror flicks. At least we are all movie buffs at heart though that like to watch flicks outside of the horror box. There are times I just feel like watching a good Thriller or drama. Often times the cheesiness of a horror flick is just not what I'm looking for.

I went several years without watching many movies in general...i trust fright's opinion more than most since he usually is spot on with reviews...i work too much so movie watching is difficult...i read more horror books than watch films...it's easier since I dont have to do it all at once and the rare occassion that I actually get a break at work I can read for a bit.

After i saw Silence of the Lambs - then more so when i saw it win the oscar for best picture - i realized that horror didn't have to be shallow and obvious. After seeing 2 other movies shortly after - Candyman and Cape Fear - i realized that horror films were becoming more substantial.

Sinister. It proves movies can be truly scary from beginning to end while not breaking the molds of horror that have already been established. It shows that when the proper talent is assembled it can make a tried, true, and played to death formula new and refreshing.

The movie is made with passion for the genre and it truly shows. This is no movie that is just slapped together and rushed out to get a quick buck. Sinister is a horror movie that can trancend the genre and win over viewers that want to watch a very well made and well acted experience.

So yes, with all the crap being released in theaters being passed off as horror, Sinister is a shining star.

If I get bored of the genre I normally just change the type of movie I'm watching. So if I've been watching slashers I'll change it up and watch supernatural etc. I tend to go on bouts of watching the same type of movie. Inside made me want more French extremism films and Cabin in the Woods made me want more original ideas. So there's bad and good with films like this because you're left with wanting more, which you will most likely not find.

Like some others here, I never straight out stop watching them. I do, however, go through a phase here and there where none of the horror movies available to me seem appealing at the time. Usually this means I need an action fix. This usually only lasts a day or two before I'm craving slaughter and creepiness.

Aside from horror, I watch a shit ton of dramas. I think that's probably my fav. genre next to horror. Then action and comedy come a close third

Action and comedy(has to be hardcore R comedy though) take up most of my other viewing pleasures. There is no other movie made that I have seen more than Step Brothers. I have honestly seen it over 100 times and it never gets old.

I think 2012 has been a pretty good year for horror. IMO the best horror movie in years(cabin in the woods), plus there were some hidden gems like Lovely Molly, Absentia, The Pact, and Grave Encounters 2. Sinister looks awesome.
