Damn Hammill's looking badass. I hope he maintains much of his "Luke" persona and doesn't go full on boring like Obi-won, Quai-gon, or even Samuel Jackson (I can't think of his name) seemed to be as Jedi masters

I actually kinda like it. It was probably changed because the original helmet fell into public domain under industrial design, and can easily be reproduced. Gotta protect those merchandise dollars.

The new rumors reveal that Luke is a captive of the Inquisitors, the villains of the upcoming “Star Wars Rebels” television series. Sort of a Sith task force, the Inquistors used to deal directly with Darth Vader and seem to have captured Luke shortly after the events of Return of the Jedi.

If these rumours are true, then Abrams.

Except it's dating the film before it's even out. The designs in the original three films weren't based on existing design language in consumer products. This stuff is straight out of our industrial design, looking like your typical corporate stuff, like something you might find in a bathroom or kitchen, like some piece of janitorial equipment. This is the Wal-Mart Made In China version of a stormtrooper helmet. The original three films have a timeless quality to the tech. This is so predictably low bar stuff. A bit better than the junk that filled the prequels but not much better. This is Star Trek mentality (and design) invading Star Wars.

There was a mixture of "outdated", serviceable and contemporary tech and designs in the original films but it all worked together and looked quite consistent, with dirt being the main giveaway as to how old something is, not its industrial design necessarily. This need to "update" designs is driven by both ego and a failure to understand that the culture in the SW universe is so advanced things change slower, not faster. These are feudal people, lots of them wearing robes and other primitive garb while being comfortable around faster than light space travel and energy weapons.

There aren't quarterly sales expectations and loads of consumers who need to be convinced to buy needless, cosmetic changes to a design that already works. Given the original cast of characters is still (mostly) alive there is no good reason to not make Episode VII look damn near just like IV, V and VI.

ok because your post was a few paragraphs long, my opinion of thinking the helmet looks alright has been totally changed. Well done.

Yes the design works, but it's now public domain in the UK. Meaning Cosplayers can wear and produce unlicensed versions and Hasbro/Disney gets no slice of the pie... even though they really love the pie.

Design matters. Especially in a franchise that was a revolution to film, scifi-fantasy, production design and style when it was first introduced.

And that being a reason is totally unmoving to me as to why going with inferior, product-based design is somehow an acceptable alternative to just doing what would be best for a franchise that has been decimated and pissed on by its original creator. I mean, I had no optimism at all when they announced that JJ was going to be at the helm. I almost feel a sense of glee that this confirms my suspicions he was going to Star Trek this universe and all his pandering to fans with proclamations that it was going to be shot on film and rely on miniatures was a load, just easy decisions he could make to bolster his fake fanboi facade. Start the clock for a pathetic Michael Bay/Peter Jackson plea to just give his schtick a chance.

I'd washed my hands of this whole universe and decided I'd just occasionally enjoy Star Wars and Empire and the rest of it just didn't matter and I shouldn't let it interfere with my enjoyment of those two. These images have just been popping up everywhere and it makes me want to hurl. Having great looking production design should be the "easy" part of making these films.

The spamming of sorts of the Jedi/Sith saga was the biggest downfall of the Prequel Trilogy, above anything else IMO.

The Original Trilogy was a space adventure with many, many fun characters to like. The Jedi/Sith saga wasn't shoved down the viewer's throats until probably the final act of Jedi.

I have a horrible, TERRIBLE feeling that the Sequel Trilogy will only cater to the people who want the damn Jedi/Sith saga above all else. It's probably going to drag them down and make them unwatchable bore fests like the Prequel Trilogy ended up being.

    The Original Trilogy had...

    1. Epic Space Battles
    2. Pilots with faces
    3. Better, more developed side characters you actually gave a shit about
    4. Great scenery
    5. Decent/Good Acting
    6. Galactful conflict

    The Prequel Trilogy had...

    1. Midichlori blah blah blah
    2. Forgetful villains
    3. Boring ass space battles, with faceless pilots
    4. Jar Jar Binks
    5. Wooden Acting
    6. Too much political nonsense
