David Ayer is back with his latest dark crime thriller End of Watch starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. I dig most of Ayer's work, with Training Day being his best, though I was surprised to find that End of Watch was probably one of his better (if not) best efforts. The story basically follows a couple officers as they pursue several crimes during their shift and eventually coming across stuff that ends up pissing off the wrong people.
Really loved the gritty and realistic handheld camera approach the film took since it made you feel like you were right in there with the cops. What made the movie really work was the chemistry between the two leads. It seemed like they really were best friends as well as partners, which made you care and fear for their safety when shit would hit the fan. If you dig Ayer's previous work or really like crime dramas (especially about cops) then give this a look.
7/10 (but a VERY high 7, almost an 8)
