First Chan-wook Park's Oldboy and now Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is getting the US remake treatment. Charlize Theron co-produces and stars in the remake, which is being written by William Monahan (The Departed, Body of Lies, Edge of Darkness). Monahan was quoted saying: "This will be very American – and very unexpected. Park is a genius; it’s the Everest of adaptations and I’ve got blood in my teeth to do it."
The original film followed a woman falsely accused for a murder she didn't commit and is sent to prison for over a decade. After her release she attempts to go about a normal life, while also plotting and acting out the revenge against the person who really committed the murder.
Love Park's Vengeance trilogy, with Oldboy being my favorite. Lady Vengeance wasn't as strong as Oldboy or Mr. Vengeance, but was still a solid addition to the trilogy. I'm sure this Americanized version will be interesting, but ultimately a waste, however Monahan is a talented writer, so maybe it'll end up being a movie all on its own, much like he did with The Departed. Either way, only time will tell
