Agreed. Horror movies that use only CGI is very annoying. I don't mind a mix of practical and CGI though, that is as long as it's decent.

    /sigh

And horror fans are all folks that should be watched closely because they're obviously disturbed and potentially dangerous. They all listen to that wicked "heavy metal" and only deviants like that kind of noise.

    Right?

edit: of course I don't actually think that, I'm just trying to illustrate how these uninformed, anti-CGI rants sound to me. That is all.

Yeeah, I know. It's a shame though. I'd love to see a bit more of it in films. It just brings a great other wordly feel. A lot of people these days though only care about the effects though.

This is why I hate The Expendables. I couldn't believe those old school action hero's went the CG route with everything. I was disgusted. I turned it off. Stallone you dead to me.

It depends on the context a lot. When I watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, I am amazed at the visuals.. but the visuals in something like Avatar bore the hell out of me. Even though the CGI is pretty and photorealistic, I don't care, because there's nothing to be in awe about. It's like they do their best to give us eye candy but too much and it all becomes meaningless.

Like what they did with the original Star Wars movies.. the original compositions were simple, yet perfect. But now they have CGI shit flying everywhere and it's hard to give a fuck anymore. It's the same with CGI battle scenes - it's like watching someone play a video game... if I can't get involved with what is on screen then I don't give a fuck. Regardless if the CGI looks "real" or not.

Sin City, 300, Inception, Nolan's Batmans, etc. There's lots of good non-horror films that use CGI, though horror is tougher to find, films like Cabin in the woods, MBV3D, Trollhunter, Event horizon, and many others use it when necessary and still make the film enjoyable.

    CGI versus Practical fx

I really hate when they use cgi for something mundane. I saw a movie where the director wanted a chair a certain color but couldn't find it, so he cgi it the color

The upside for folks that love awesome practical effects is they can have them all. They were done a long time ago by people who aren't that good anymore or who, apparently, never trained people good enough to continue their legacy. I'm betting most of you already have just about everything cool made up to 1982. Your work is done. Enjoy. Be happy. You just gotta wait until Bluray gets replaced to buy all of it over again and enjoy how good you think it still looks.

Actually it is replacing simple, practical effects such as blood splatter from gunshots. Now that's as simple as it gets.
