    The Spaghetti Western Appreciation Thread

I figured the boards could use a thread for any fans of Spaghetti Westerns to come together in and talk about these awesome movies. From Django to Sartana, Lee Van Cleef to Tomas Milian and the 3 Sergio's discuss it here.

I just posted a review for one of my all time favorite westerns, THE GREAT SILENCE. Check it out if you have even a passing interest in the genre. http://celluloidterror.blogspot.com/...ence-1968.html

Great idea, sometimes I venture into the genre and in general love it, as it shares a lot in common with one of the other favorites, the samurai movie.

Django is my favorite I think, the original is so over the top and brutal, the film is just plain intense.

Django is also in my top 3 haha. Its just plain awesome. You're right about SWs and the samurai film having a lot in common. The genre was sort of born out of the samurai film with Sergio Leone making A Fistful Of Dollars as a pseudo-remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo.

I'm not really into wasterns but I10 of them are some of my fave movies actually.

John Wayne's movies are not my cup of tea. Not at all. I'm more into Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood's movies and movies featuring Bud Spencer and Terence Hill.

Dyango is brilliant, extraordinary and memorable is the scene where Django drag a coffin through the mud of Mexican land. (Mexican?)

Another of the great films of the genre is undoubtedly Once Upon a Time in the West, have a great start and a stunning final duel, but the length I found something excessive.

But the message behind the film is clear, the end of an era, the end of the Wild West. The new times are coming by the way of progress and the gunmen are a dying breed.

I can watch either, but I prefer an Spag-Western over John Wayne anyday.

OUATITW is just another fine example of how brilliant Sergio Leone is.

My favorite western of all time has to be Death Rides A Horse. Not only is a great western done very well, but a fantastic revenge film too.

I loves me some spaghetti westerns.

    Some of my favs are:

    The Dollars Trilogy
    OUATITW
    The Great Silence
    Django
    Death Rides a Horse

I re-watched 'Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot!', 'Massacre Time' and 'Sabata' again recently. All are solid. I've had 'A Bullet for the General' for a while but I haven't got around to it yet. I also have the most complete version of 'The Big Gundown'. I will have to get around to that one very soon.

Spaghetti Western or not, Unforgiven is top of the list...hands down. That movie is pure bad-ass!

I also really like Raimi's The Quick and the Dead.

This movie doesn't, generally, get the respect it deserves, as a Western, as a film or in Raimi's filmography. I love the hell out of it.

"Unforgiven" is very good and an interesting complement to "High plains drifter" and "Pale rider".

It is, but does not belong to Spaghetti genre.

Technically, yeah, since I don't think Clint is a WOP. But he learned how to make a Western from Leone and his films share more with the Italians than with the American tradition, in both style and substance.

Discussion of all Eastwood westerns should be welcomed in here as the later ones that weren't Italian productions are certainly more in the vein of them than say Gene Autry. I probably should have titled this thread "Spaghetti Western and Revisionist Westerns". Lets use it for all things anti singing cowboys and lame "howdy pilgrim" type westerns.

You mean technically no, right? Perhaps only in spirit.

While I agree that it is evident that Clint Eastwood has learned from Sergio Leone, and is clear the influence from him in Unforgiven something that can be noticed regarding his style and others.

I also think that Clint deserves much more than a mere mention of honor, it is best not to confuse people by saying that "Unforgiven" is a spaghetti western, because it is not.

    Hear hear!

Funny thing, Eastwood couldn't make films in America cause he was under a tv contract that led him to do films in Italy, the rest is history.

One of the bloodiest westerns, I have ever seen. Not a Spag-western, but still worth a mention.
