It was just so damned painful for me to watch, just felt like some 'try-hard' let's get into the exploitation craze type of thing. Just nothing in it I thought was decent, I just cringed.
I really like these as well, especially MOTHER OF TEARS
Yup except I don't think I have seen DEAD SILENCE so shall
As for SPIDER BABY I loved it but fuck that's life I guess so

Do non-genre films count cos the one film of the last year that I thought was a puddle of wank while everyone else ranted and raved about it was 'Drive'. What a pile of shite that was.

I'd say something happens particularly with regards to Drive, is one of those movies that those we love, we can see in it something special, I would say a kind of mystique that surrounds it, yes .. I said mystique. I don't know if it will be its perfect frames, its aerial shots of that city that shines in the darkness of the night, its hypnotic soundtrack or the violent explosions ripped from the break. But I also understand that these features almost subliminal does not work for many people.

Hmmm...
I disliked: 28 Days Later (seriously will only watch this because of Cillian Murphy), the entire SAW series and Lost Boys
I liked: Prometheus (I know many like it, but most discussions I've had with people are them yelling at me how horrible it is >_<), Silent Hill
"I may be synthetic, but I'm not stupid." - Bishop (Aliens)

For me, "Driver" is an heroic version of James Caan's character in Michael Mann's Thief, a film that this films owes immensely. I say heroic without any hyperbole or irony because this guy acts where men of lesser character would walk away. Yes, "Driver" delivers violent, brutal retribution to those that deserve to die by the sword but it was absolutely necessary and brought on completely by the antagonists.
Ultimately it ends as a tragedy, like it should, or at least you're left with an ambiguous ending and don't really know where "Driver" is leaving to as the credit rolls, just like Caan walking down the street and away from his former mobster boss's house after taking him and his crew out. DeNiro went back for his woman at the end of Heat (another character that shares similarities with Thief) and look where that got him.
Besides being a beautifully crafted film the characters are fantastically rendered and unexpectedly quirky. The story is timeless. I could easily imagine this translated back to Old Hollywood and cast with Bogart and Bergman. Some people just don't recognize or appreciate true cinema anymore I guess. Loads are short sighted enough to not get passed the superficial '80s-inspired layer that isn't the substance of the film at all.

I didn't like Saw, High Tension, 28 Days Later, and these days I find the Nightmare on Elm Street flicks tedious as all hell.
I know lots of folks have warmed up to this one over the years, but I have always dug Halloween III.

Buncha Johnny Come Latelys. Yeah, dug it from the first time I saw it back when it premiered the first time on HBO when I was eleven or so. One of the only contemporary witch movies that's any good. I'd put it up there with Curse of the Demon and Rosemary's Baby and Drag Me To Hell as the only ones I can readily recall off hand.

Another one I've never understood the adulation for (and this will prolly win me some enemies) is Mario Bava's completely fucking boring proto-slasher Twitch of the Death Nerve aka Bay of Blood aka a million other alternate titles.
Horribly dated, tedious and thorougly boring, notable only for its claim as being the first ever rural based slasher and kickstarting a billion other rip-offs. I'd rather watch Return to Sleepaway Camp than this dull shite. It seems cool to love Mario Bava and wanky pretentious know-nothings will point and drool to his films because they once read a book where he was praised but, other than Beyond the Door 2 aka Shock I've universally detested the rest of his ouevre.
