Mexican horror movie from the 70s or 80s starring a bearded guy

This is the longest of the long shots, but I've had this movie on my mind for years and have never found any information about it. If there happens to be a Mexican horror film fan this may be something you know.

Plot: A creepy bearded ghost/phantom/psycho inhabits a house. A couple move into the house and the antagonist terrorizes them. The male lead protects and ultimately saves the female lead by fighting the antagonist and then becoming the new ghost/phantom/psycho that inhabits the house. He sacrifices himself.

Characters: I remember the male lead as a guy with a dark beard. There was a female lead as well but I don't recall any details. The antagonist is a creepy ghost-looking guy with a beard but he may have just been a slasher-type killer.

Time: The look and quality of the movie as I recall it makes me think it's something from the 70s or early 80s.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Are you sure it's Mexican? Not very many of us can grow beards. Perhaps Spanish or something else?

Sounds indeed familiar. Can it be a Coffin Joe film?
