Vulture is reporting that Joe Dante’s classic Gremlins is inching closer into remake territory. Here’s the scoop:

“Our sources tell us that, in keeping with Hollywood’s mandated pop culture recycling program, Warner Bros. Pictures is negotiating with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to reboot their 1984 horror comedy, Gremlins.

We’re also told negotiations of this sort have happened several times over the years, but making Spielberg’s deal always proved too daunting a financial prospect and his involvement might simply be a requirement for making the film at all, so don’t hold your breath. Having said all of that, our sources tell us that it might just actually come off this time.”

Gremlins sequel has been talked about for years. This isn't anything really new; just more talk. I personally wouldn't mind seeing a sequel actually happen though

The most recent talks sound a lot more like remake than sequel though. I am more open to a sequel than a remake. Although I wouldn't be excited for either.

Although this news doesn't surprise me I am amazed that they never got the go ahead a lot earlier than this assuming it gets the green light. So many cool/ good memories are brought back each time I watch the original. Also saddens me that the relationship I had back then never really blossomed.

I can deal with a remake as long as the gremlins aren't CGI. They looked so cool in the second movie. I'd hate for them to wait 20 years to make a new movie only to make the Gremlins look fake and stupid.

It'll be a remake, I mean cmon.

If hollywood has taught us anything over time, especially in this remake era.

It's that they usually always go with youth/fresh faces in these projects.

Outside of lame recasting. Zach Galligan/Phoebe Cates are both 'up there' in age and I doubt anyone else from the original/sequel would be interested even if it were a good payday/publicity.

Add all that up, it'll most certainly be a remake with virtual unknowns/new faces from tv.

For a sequel if they just made it as Zach and Phoebe still being the guardian of Gizmo (It has to be Giz. He is too cool to have died of old age like a dog) Zach a Phoebe decide their teenage kid is responsible enough to watch Gizmo for the weekend as they go out of town for some reason. Next thing we see is the teenager throwing a party and a beer gets spilled on Gizmo. Gremlin hijinks would then ensue. Not a brilliant idea, but definitely more watchable than a remake.

Agreed, I think a sequel seems more likely than a remake, but then again I doubt they'd proceed on a sequel with Joe Dante, while-as a remake would definitely give the studio an excuse to reboot the series with a new name behind

CGI and gremlins makes no sense at all, and I'm hoping whoever helms this (if it happens) will understand this.
There is absolutely no reason to use anything other than puppets in a gremlins film......Puppets and stop motion, if necessary.
