Joel Silver‘s Silver Pictures has joined forces with Studio Canal to work on a "retelling" of Escape From New York.
"Silver is planning an entirely new take on the material. The goal is to turn it into a trilogy, starting with an origin story in a fashion similar to the way Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes restarted that franchise."
This wouldn't be the first time a remake had been attempted, as New Line made a go at it with producer Neil Moritz and Breck Eisner (The Crazies) as director. Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hardy were all considered to play Plissken. That effort ended when New Line let the option lapse almost two years ago.

If you think about it, Escape From LA was essentially a remake of NY and that film was pretty horrible. Nothing will top the original, but I'm honestly open for a reboot of the films, especially if they intend to do an "origin story" and make it into a full trilogy. It would be nice to see Plissken rise to become to badass that he's known for. Hopefully they pick out a good actor to play the role, because the wrong casting can really ruin everything. Still, nothing will top Kurt Russell in the original.
