I just hope they don't make the king of monsters like he was in that first reboot. that was horrible.

I think they learned from the mistakes of the last one. Although hearing this one has a "realistic" tone makes me cringe. The last one was sorta that way and look how shitty it turned out. I'm suprised they haven't shown an image of big G yet. I know theres been a lot of speculation images but no official "This is it!" image. But I think terms like "realistic" and "gritty" and "dark" get thrown around way to much these days anyway.

The last one was done by Roland Emmerich, need I say more? He is incapable of putting a movie together with a serious tone. He makes leave your brain at the door popcorn movies, which isn't always a bad thing. He made a Godzilla movie that turned into Jurassic Park with our "hero's" being hunted by mini Godzilla velociraptors.
I won't even begin to compare this version to what Emmerich has done. That movie is an embarassment to everything Godzilla stands for, this production won't take that approach.

Godzilla is Japanese. Imagine if Japan did their own version of Superman or Batman. Would just be silly.

I dunno, the Japanese Batman anime was badass, though I guess they were written by Americans

That's just the animation style.
You're talking about genres, though. Shakespeare is pretty universal in his themes, that's why modern films can be made about his plays and across cultures.
Westerns cross over into a number of genres. They aren't exclusively American, either.
My point is, why can't they just create their own character? Why use the name Godzilla (I know - marketing value).
I'm sure the Japanese have copied Batman and Superman, but created their characters inspired by them.
Godzilla will always be a character based in Japan. This Godzilla is not the classic Godzilla, but everybody will only know the new version. It just ruins the character. Why not make it in Japan? It's like when they changed War of the Worlds to New York or some other American City instead of London where it was supposed to take place. Lame, uncreative, and obviously only done for the market value.
Fuck this.

Toho has given permission for this as well as the 1998 version, and will be getting a piece of the pie. Because what started out as an anti-war/ anti-nuke allegory has turned into a universally recognizable franchise and cash cow.
And Japanese publishers have done Manga retellings on classic Marvel characters.

OK, Gareth Edwards truly loves Godzilla and his fans. Akira Takarada is on set and at the very least, wll problebly have a some role in the film.
If anyone is curious as to who Akira Takarada is, he was in the very first godzilla film in 1954, along with roles in Godzilla vs Mothra, Godzilla vs Monster Zero, Godzilla vs the Sea Monster and Godzilla: Final Wars. Needless to say, the man is fucking legend in Godzilla films.
