As we continue to be teased by fleeting glimpses of the beast in this summer's GODZILLA, a new clear image of the monster has emerged online in the form of a toy model. The display of the creature is in front of the latest official GODZILLA poster and sports a little placard that cautions this is not the final design (pending licensing approval). But, seeing as we are a few months away, I would venture this is likely what we will be seeing on screen.

That's a serious overbite!

Please, enlighten us with how it's significantly different from the generic image of Godzilla. It's immediately recognizable as the one and only thing it could be.

Top one has the goofy face and too many Big Macs physique. Bottom one looks way "off model", like you can tell what it's supposed to be but, but it's not very good. So...
Mainly the new one has more reptilian looking skin versus tree bark. I do prefer the fatter tails though I'm almost positive I could find illustrations in old Hobby Japan magazines that looked dead-on like the new one. But that's part of the issue. Godzilla artwork has always looked better than the suits. I'm not afraid to say it. Those live action kaiju movies have their charm and some are quite enjoyable but the "idea" of Godzilla and his depictions in media other than the actual films has almost always been better.
So by "generic" I meant something encompassing the film suits, illustrations, models, etc. Stuff too close to the old goofy film suits is only an approximation of what Godzilla can be.

It looks like they didn't want to take any risks so that's why the design is so bland-looking. Generic. The original Godzilla may look goofy by today's standards but that is an iconic design. The new one looks like they tried too hard to please the fans.

I agree with Orlock. It looks like they played it safe, I like that badass red lit one (I'm guessing it's from the Millennial series?) it looks like the Gman but is takes the risk of adding a more reptilian face and more exaggerated spikes on the back.
The new design just looks "frumpy" with his subdued spikes, massive overbite, and tree stump legs and feet.
Don't get me wrong I'm still gonna watch the movie but if that's the design it gets one big "meh" from me.

I prefer a look like the one with the red spines as well. The face is almost snake-like especially with the fangs. This new Godzilla doesn't even look like he could clap

The top one is the original 1954 design.. the bottom is the Millennium version, as seen in the first two Millennium Era Godzilla flicks, Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs Megaguiras... but they changed the color-scheme for that model from what it was in the movies. I too would like to see the Godzilla in the new movie look a bit more bad-ass like the Millennium G, but I'm happier that he looks more like Godzilla than that 1998 cinematic abortion did.

I like the new design, but I don't like that toy odd enough. It looks like it should be in some pose and not just standing there. Anyways the original meaning of Gojira is a mixture of their words for Gorilla and Whale and I think oddly enough the new version kind shows that. And my favorite version of Godzilla is in Giant Monsters all Out Attack with the white pupils and big fangs. I mean he was just freakin scary in that. I saw in an Interview where Brian Cranston said this G was gonna me sort of like Jaws in the way that sometimes you see the beast and sometimes you just "feel his presence"
