Although I always put Psycho on top as the best film that was based on actual events, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is right there next to it.

The Amityville Horror (original) is one that works for me.
The Strangers was sweet.
Of course, The Silence of the Lambs
Wasn't too crazy about Wolf Creek and Open Water although they were OK once.

None of those are 'based' on actual events.. More like inspired. But I have never seen a horror movie that actual follows real-life events to any degree of accuracy.

I Drink Your Blood was inspired by Charles Manson and his family's shenanigans.

So, psychotic madness does have its 'up side' after all.

Funny thing about the original Amityville, it was supposedly based on true events as described in the book that the family claimed they experienced...however it has been suggested that the Lutz family made whole thing up and just wanted to cash in on the murders that previously took place in the house. However, the sequel/prequel (Part 2) is ACTUALLY based on true events of how the son murdered his entire family that led up to the speculated "lies" of the original.

Lots of good movies were based on Ed Gein...Psycho, Texas Chainsaw, Silence of the Lambs, Ed Gein, etc

However, the greatest horror based on a true story of all time was:

Not the majority. The majority are based on other horror films. In other words, derivative. Only the classic horror films go to that level of research, to bring extra authenticity and make the movie scarier.
