I really want to see this, but I didn't like that trailer much. I loved Pitch Black but was very disappointed by Chronicles especially the shaky cam in one of the first scenes. It wasn't all bad though.

Ah, Riddick. Being a fan of Vin Diesel and a huge fan of the Riddick character I looked forward to this more than some. With that being said this movie is far from a slam dunk. Even with my obvious bias with Riddick and Diesel this movie did not live up to my expectations.

Take the previous 2 installments and throw them away, they are irrelevant here. That isn't really an issue since you either loved or hated Chronicles and it's been far too long since Pitch Black graced theater screens. The important thing here is Riddick and Riddick alone.

This film gives you some back story that may confuse some who haven't seen the previous two films but again it simply doesn't matter. Riddick is the show stealer here and what has taken place prior to this is water under the bridge. With that being said we find out more about Riddick but that is merely to get those who truly are in the dark (no pun intended) about him something to grasp a hold of.

Riddick is quickly back to his old bag of tricks but this time the serious tone of both previous films leave the building and the violence ramps up. The violence here loses it's charm as we root for the bad guy because the film goes over the top and the killings take on an almost slapstick quality.

This is where I feel like I have been let down. Pitch Black was so effective and gave us such a bad ass character in Riddick because the film was gritty and in your face. You were rooting for a truly bad guy and loving it because it had a sense of realism to it. Here you get none of that. Instead you get a script laden with quirky one liners and killings full of CGI with an edge of slapstick comedy. There are plenty of killings and plenty of gore but the context all this takes place in is quite disappointing. Add in the over abundance of CGI creatures and you have a film that is simply mediocre.

The only saving grace is Diesel and Riddick but by the time the credits roll he loses a lot of the hardcore, bad ass charm we have known and loved.

In summary although the movie is disappointing in the direction they took Riddick it is fun. But as I was enjoying the film I was also saying goodbye to the Riddick I knew. I still really like the character but I don't like the direction they went with him at all.

6/10 Would be higher if I didn't feel like they screwed up the character and tone of these films.

The flick being a disappointment doesn't really surprise me. I'm sure I'll probably have similar feelings after I see it

I'm still looking forward to it, but maybe with toned down expectations. Really it's a miracle the film even got made after the flop that was Chronicles, so I'd say a 6/10 isn't too shabby all things considered.

Sounds like a fun flick still, would have been nice if they went with a dark tone though and went back to Riddick being an anti-hero like in Pitch Black.

6 is being very gracious because I really like the character and Diesel. 6 is me being bias. Just for ruining such a great character I should give it a 4 or 5 but he is still fun...just not the same. Hard to describe without experiencing the difference yourself. If you are really into the Riddick from Pitch Black you will totally understand where I am coming from with this flick.

I share the same bias, otherwise I probably wouldn't have liked Chronicles either.

Maybe there is hope they can do Riddick justice in a future film, might be cool if they went back and did an origin story, Escape from Butcher Bay style. That would give ample opportunity for it to be dark and gritty.

First 30 or so mins is a solid 8/10, as we witness Riddick adapt and survive the foreign planet. Once the mercs come the pacing slows down quite a bit. Still, it was a good flick. Despite what others said, I personally didn't have a problem with the deaths or the violence. Obviously not as good as the first, but the closest we're probably ever gonna get. 7/10 (but a high 7). Bring on more Riddick

loved the movie, yeah it is more or less Pitch Black 2.0 in the second half but it didn't cheapen the movie. Now I want to see another Riddick movie. He tends to be a trouble magnet, and I'm not sold that he'll get to Furya peacfully without running into some space problems.

I guess I am the only one who doesn't like the direction they took with the character
The movie is fun but Riddick has an identity crisis.

Saw it tonight, just got back. Loved it. Went in with low expectations. SOLID SCI FI flick. Characters were actually pretty fleshed out. Surprising for a flick like this.

Nice to see the flick pretty much made its budget back now with the 2nd week at the BO. Doesn't include world wide yet and the DVD/Blu-ray release will bring in lots more $$ for it. Hopefully this means another sequel

I really dug the movie. It was more different from the first one than the trailers let on, but I could see the similarities. I didn't care for Chronicles that much so this was a step up. Its made $53 million world wide so maybe we'll get another one. As good as this one was (starbuck boob!) I hope the next one expands on things, as this one didn't really do that. Although they tried that in part 2 and it didn't really work that well IMO. I just hope they end up doing another one sometime down the road since I love the character of Riddick so much. I did dig the "mud scorpion" things.
