Liked the flick, but it took me a while to get into it. I don't mind artsy films, but I felt there were TOO many artsy scenes early on that dragged a bit. However, after the 30-minute mark it starts to pick up and the art doesn't seem to get in the way as much and I started to appreciate it. Very ambiguous and multi-layered film and although it took me a bit to get into it, I liked it. 7/10

Didn't care for it. I understand artsy films, but this was dragging in a lot of spots. Not saying it was terrible, just that it was trying too hard.

The colors were beautiful, Ryan Gosling was amazing, the film brutal and violent. 7/10

Movie was pretty good I guess, but I feel it walked up to the line of being artsy and then charged ahead into the land of self-indulgence. All the long drawn out scenes and slow moving camera work got pretty stale and distracting for me after awhile.

I did particularly like Gosling's character, and the violence was pretty solid. The story was quite interesting as well and there were more than a couple very cool camera angles but I can't help but shake the feeling they tried a little too hard and put a bit too much emphasis on style that took away from the story.

I'd probably go 6/10, not sure if I'd ever watch it again.

Still haven't seen Drive, curious how that compares to this.

The color is just crazy in this film and, amazingly, it used almost no movie lights. They would swap out bulbs at the locations, various sex bars and real places in Bangkok, but it used mostly practical light. Lots of gels. They used a lot of those LED strips. It looks slick as hell but it was essentially shot like a low budget.

I bet it has even less dialogue than Valhalla Rising.

Drive is a completely different animal, TacticalBacon. That's NWR doing "mainstream". It has amazing artistic value at the same time and most of this is more or less hidden in plain sight. But it's got a more Hollywood Western structure and theme to it whereas Only God Forgives is more of a Samurai movie. And that's not a reference to the cop having the sword, I'm talking themes.

NWR films, stylistically, are informed by mostly avant guard art directors from before he was born. I forget who he names as a major influence for Only God Forgives but I still saw a lot of Kenneth Anger in there. He's all over Drive and Valhala Rising.

Sweet, I'll have to check out Drive then, sounds more like what I was expecting out of this.

This is one of the things I did like most about this movie, really dug Gosling's character and his sense of honor throughout the movie.

I enjoyed it actually. i was gripped from start to finish and i think Kristen Scott Thomas gave one of the best most powerful performances. A little self indulgent at times, not sure it required as many kareoke scenes, not sure id watch it again but i liked the story and felt it had a message to it.

In my cinema it really split audiences some loving it some hating it, one woman going crazy saying how dare we show a film this violent?! lol
