The Grandmaster is the latest IP Man related film to come outta Hong Kong, but this time from a more visionary director (Kar Wai Wong). Reportedly 4 hours long, but cut down to 2 for audiences, it really shows, as the film is more about people around IP Man's life rather than IP Man himself and there are some noticeable editing issues, as some scenes seem a little random or out of place and at times it was like the movie wasn't sure if it was going to be a drama, romance, or a martial arts pic. Negative aside, it is beautifully shot, and the action/fighting is mesmerizing when shown, and it's clear there's a lot of heart behind the storytelling, it's just a little mixed up due to the forced editing. Either way, I still enjoyed the flick for the most part and would give it a 7/10 (but a very low 7).
