Scarface Remake (David Yates *Harry Potter* To Direct?)

Universal has been gestating a remake of SCARFACE for a while now, developing it "quietly" so as not to enrage a fanbase that worships both the 1932 original or the 1983 remake, directed by Brian DePalma. So, just where are they in the process of developing a new iteration? According to Deadline, they're very close:

The director the studio is courting at the moment is none other than David Yates, who helmed the final four HARRY POTTER films and is currently shooting ST. NAZAIRE, a British WWII film. Prior to POTTER, Yates was a fairly prolific TV director, but burst onto the scene with his strong, epic-scope style with the famous franchise. One could say that he'd be able to "write his own ticket" at this point.

I'm not too upset about this. I'm a huge fan of the original Howard Hawks masterpiece as well as the DePalma 80s-fest. This really is a timeless story, the power hungry low-life doing what it takes to make it to the top of the crime world and his obsessions ultimately lead to his downfall. It's been a while since I can remember a really good crime movie (maybe The Departed) so I say I'm ready for a modern day take on the tale.

They'll be hard pressed to tell this story better than Breaking Bad is already doing, granted it will be in much shorter movie format.

Scarface with Pacino was a decent movie but it's really overrated. Never saw the original.

About the only thing they could do with this that would be remotely fresh is making the low life part a chick instead.

But they won't because it won't make nearly as much, plus even with all the strides made over the last 30 years or so with female heroins/villains (Ripley, Buffy, Wonder Woman, Catwoman, etc). I don't think America is ready for a lowlife chick to become some big crime boss who loses it all. Even if she were some ugly butch tard instead of some model who can't act, they wouldn't buy it.

Scarface remake? No thanx....it's been done twice. Antonio Banderas has been talked to about the role of Tony Montana....only this time the remake will tackle life amongst the Colubian/Mexican and Bolivian cartels....dealing with the current drug crisis. Could be OK but in no way is ANYONE gonna have the charm of Pacino's "Montana"....no way.

Seen the original but I agree with this.

Only thing I see it yet another wave of teens worshiping the film but forgetting the ending. But them again that isn't really the filmmakers problem.
