Season one was one of the best chunks of TV I've ever watched. I started watching season 2, got halfway through and gave up. Never went back.

...well, in that case it jumps on my already-too-long list of things to watch later. There are a couple of other shows I want to watch first.

There's such a long gap between seasons, I often forget that they're even still doing new eps
Either way, looks interesting. I like the frozen setting

Finished up the short 6 episode 4th season Night Country, and it's mediocre at best. The lack of any Nic Pizzolatto input is apparent here.
This is the first season that he wasn't involved in any meaningful way whatsoever and it really shows.
What was originally made to be a stand alone mystery series ended up being cobbled together and served under the True Detective umbrella... with specific writing bridging together both series to give it a True Detective tie in. It was an alright idea i guess. Not sure how effective it was really, but it was done.
Coupled with a harsh, foreboding, anxiety ladened location it made for a tense, interesting story to unpack, but im sort of mixed on the conclusion. I'm also not a huge fan of ambiguous endings either.... but that's what you're left with here. Sometimes i think these endings are meaningful and impactively deliberate, but other times it think it's the product of under imaginative lazy writing.
I take them for what they are though, and if everything preceding that is more that adequate, then i can come to terms with it a little better, but i don't think this season quite pulls that off. Driving on the yellow line is fine for the bulk of a season, but at the end of the day they probably should've picked a lane.
I came into this season thinking what a harrowing setting and premise to get embroiled in, but in hindsight i'm not all that impressed, and ended it feeling more than a little flat. I do think it's worth watching for what it is though, but IMO it's easily the weakest of the True Detective universe seasons.
(If you want to even classify it a TD season, because technically it is not.)
FWIW...... Does anybody really want to see 62 yr. old J.F. in a sex scene. I really wish i could unsee that.

I liked the season, but it's definitely the weakest. The mystery was interesting, especially in the beginning and I really liked the harsh cold setting, but as it goes on it's apparent that the writing isn't as smart as it tries to be. There's also a lot of pacing issues, with some eps barely having any action or anything that moves the story along until the end of the ep. Liked the two leads and I made sure to fast forward any unnecessary sex scenes, so my mind hasn't been scarred by Foster like you guys
Not sure how I feel about all the supernatural elements. Some of them were interesting, while other times they just seemed to exist for a cheap scare. Negatives aside, it kept my interest for the most part, and I still liked the season overall, just not as much as the other seasons. I'd probably give it a low 7 or a high 6.
Also, despite it being the weakest season, it was apparently the most watched season? That's according to HBO, who not only renewed for another season, but they want to bring back the showrunner for this season Issa López to once again do the next. Hopefully she learns from her mistakes and makes the next season much better, but only time will tell.

"The season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers. The season finale on Feb. 18 was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. That represents a 57% increase over the show’s premiere viewership in January."

I watched it. Wasn't bad. Wasn't great. I liked the setting but felt there were too many character stories that were left hanging. I give it a 7/10

I watched it. It was not good at all. Had some interesting ideas but the end result is a bunch of meaningless garbage and while the consistent dark tone can be refreshing it felt like it was just smashing a cynical hammer over your head for the sake of cynicism and nothing more. Some of the set pieces made me think of John Carpenter's The Thing but after those intriguing bits it all goes down hill and the weird thing is like they're not always focused on the detective parts and just focus on the drama surrounding them which is fine but the drama is not that good and it's all just sooo poorly written and Jodie Foster's character is an idiot throughout the season.
I'm not interested in seeing more of this crap, I'll just go back to the previous seasons which at least were a little more compelling and not bogged down by the bad pacing and reeeeeally bad writing of this season.
