    Fear the Walking Dead

Apparently AMC has greenlit a spinoff series set within the Walking Dead universe that will have a lot of the regular shows creators behind it--"The scripted series will hail from Walking Dead comics creator Robert Kirkman and executive producers Gale Anne Hurd and Dave Alpert."

The series will feature brand new stories and characters, with an aimed release sometime in 2015. Kirkman had this to say about it:

"After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing."

It just sounds like an excuse to cash in on the success of the already prominent series, but also give the creators enough room to explore different avenues not yet addressed in the comic, so it's not necessarily a bad thing. Chances are the spinoff will air during the times when Walking Dead isn't, which should help fill the void until it returns again without having to veer too far from the universe we're familiar with. Either way, I welcome more zombie action

Makes sense. The possibilities are endless with this series. New characters can be sprung up all over the place. Cool for fans of the show.

    Damn sir.

    You beat me to it.

    Couple things. Related and Unrelated.

    1. As far as spinoffs go, Angel was one of the greatest spinoffs of all time IMO. The crossover work Whedon and company did between starting with Buffy Season 4 and Angel Season 1 was quite good. Only they only really followed up with that sparingly as both series went on.

    2. Regarding the Walking Dead spinoff. Who knows. Buffy didn't have the baggage of fanboys crying about source material since the 92 Buffy movie was complete shit, no offense intended to those who prefer the Walking Dead comic by far.

The Walking Dead will have that baggage and it might throw people off if the spinoff doesn't involved some form of prior Walking Dead Source Material. Whether its the telltale game or taking a side character in the comics and basing it around them completely.

    3. Kirkman seems like he wants a clean slate, so he doesn't have the baggage of the comic and the fans of the comic more so than the show.

This could be an opportunity to focus on the epidemic in other areas across the world.

    All ranting aside.

    I'll keep an open mind.

I hope it works, but I hope this doesn't end up killing things prematurely. There are a million other stories that can be told here, but its gonna be very easy to accidentally create the same damn show all over again. Hopefully that doesn't happen.

The more I think about it.

The best idea IMO, could be following up on what the Jenner character (CDC) said in Season 1 about the French coming close to a cure or solution of some sorts. So setting the spinoff in Europe would be fantastic.

There are rumors that this may be a prequel to the regular series and detail the early bits of the outbreak and how people dealt with it and attempted to find a cure. That's just a rumor, but what is known is that it will feature a completely different story, location, and actors.

Creator Robert Kirkman was quoted saying: "It’s a really different location with completely different people, so we are going to see an entirely different corner of the ‘Walking Dead’ world. It definitely won’t be set in Georgia, I can at least say that."

He adds... "It’s important to us that this show exists on its own. The spinoff has to be a show worthy of existing, or else we’ve all sold out. So that’s something we’re all working hard towards doing, and I think we can pull it off. I think that the ideal situation is, when you’re watching the spinoff, you’re like, 'Wow, this is a really awesome show.' The whole other show doesn’t need to exist for this show to be cool and stand on its own."

So it looks like aside from the theme and Walking Dead name, they're aiming for it to be an entirely different show, which I'm happy to hear. It would be nice to see how another location and set of survivors deal with all this.

    It's official and called "Cobalt"

    http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/titl...d-spin-off-584

    Entire contents of this link:

With the mid-season finale under their belts, AMC and WALKING DEAD creator Robert Kirkman continue to develop their "companion series" to the zombie hit. Lots of news has surfaced about the spin-off which is now operating under the working title of COBALT. Whether that remains the final title is unknown, but for now THE WALKING DEAD: COBALT has unveiled the first character descriptions as well as some casting rumors.

TV Line posted the character descriptions which give us a hint of what THE WALKING DEAD: COBALT will be about. At the core will be two families, led by a former teacher and a guidance counselor, and another character named Andrea. Here are the descriptions.

SEAN CABRERA | A Latino male in his early 40s, Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.

CODY CABRERA | Sean’s whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.

NANCY TOMPKINS | A thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.

NICK TOMPKINS | Nancy’s screwed up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee.

ASHLEY TOMPKINS | Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. She loves her mom but it’s time to get out of Dodge.

ANDREA CHAPMAN | A somewhat wilted flower child, fortysomething Andrea — yep, another Andrea! — has retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.

Deadline reports that Frank Dillane (HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE) and Alycia Debnam Carey (INTO THE STORM) are up for the parts of Nick and Ashley Tompkins. Aside from that, no further casting news is know, nor is the setting. We do know the series will take place during the same time period as the main series but it is unknown where it will be set, geographically.

Personally, I like the idea of taking another group and watching them survive, but part of me was hoping for something completely different from THE WALKING DEAD dynamic. COBALT seems almost like a copy of the main series but with a different cast, which may be fun for a season or two, but will then become repetitive. Here's hoping there is more we do not yet know about the show.

THE WALKING DEAD: COBALT is expected to debut sometime in 2015.

    Yeah...

The spinoff is going to be a failure, and dare I say sink the main show in the long run.

    Reasons why...

    1. Given how tight the budget is on the main show, really how much are they going to spend on this spinoff?
    2. Is Nicotero really going to want to work on TWD year around?
    3. Too similar to the main show, so its going to feel like a B show
    4. No Rick or Daryl, they'll miss the characters of the main show, you already hear it now when they don't focus on certain characters in the main show

They had the chance to come up with an awesome premise for the spinoff...

    Any number of good ideas...

    1. Jenner's talk about the French battling to find a cure, of course they would have to shoot Cali or Georgia for France but...too expensive I guess
    2. A Prequel spinoff telling the events of the Atlanta Survivors and how they formed the group at the Rock Quarry, granted some logistical problems arise, such as actors/actresses being older, but a neat idea nonetheless
    3. Just anywhere outside the US. I kinda think going to the West Coast is a cheapskate idea just to shoot in Cali
    4. Course the best idea, don't bother with a spinoff

Instead it seems like they're going with the safest ideas.

As much as I really like the show, a spinoff is unneeded and will, more than likely, just fail after a season or two.

Although I'm always up for more zombie action on TV a spin off is a bad idea. I don't think it will do as well.

It's said that this spinoff/companion series will take place in LA. Cliff Curtis plays the male lead.

AMC has reportedly already ordered a second season. The show's first season will consist of six one-hour episodes and premiere on AMC in late summer. The show’s second season will air in 2016.

“We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television. From the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president.

I'm really on the fence about this working or not. Common sense says no, it'll fail because people will feel over-saturated with zombies. But... TWD has gotten more viewers than A LOT of shows. So there's an audience waiting. I know I'll watch. Besides zombies, I like that it'll be west coast based. I like the set-up of it being more family orientated with the parents and kids. And I definitely would like to see how they set up the beginning of TWD tv universe.

I honestly think the spinoff is going to be a massive failure and a mistake.

    1. They already struggle enough trying to balance out the main show
    2. The spinoff has the task of trying to be its own thing without alienating the crowd that watches the main show
    3. Is Greg Nicotero really going to want to work on TWD year round? Unless he gets good coin, I know I wouldn't
    4. Its a prequel set on the early days of the outbreak. So its either gonna be loaded with biters or really cheap out on the budget even more with very little biters
    5. Its just simply too much

I guess my only hope is that the backstory is decent enough, they go into more detail how the CDC/government fell (which is rumored), etc.
