Kong: King of Skull Island (Neil Marshall)

Universal owns King Kong, right? Not exactly. The character's rights are in a weird, confusing place that has only been made more confusing in the wake of numerous lawsuits. For the purpose of what is going on with Neil Marshall's new movie, here's what you have to know:

Merian C, Cooper created King Kong and thought he was licensing the character to RKO for two movies. He never bothered copyrighting Kong, but did copyright a novelization of the movie. Cooper only found out that RKO considered themselves the owners of Kong when he had legal troubles getting a Tarzan Meets King Kong* movie off the ground, and it all got ugly and legal when Cooper found out RKO was licensing Kong to Toho for King Kong vs Godzilla. And it got legal again when Dino DeLaurentiis and Universal bought the King Kong remake rights from RKO in the 70s.

The short version: Cooper ended up owning only limited publication rights to the character, but that was enough for his estate to license the creation of an illustrated novel called Kong: King of Skull Island in 2004. This novel is set 25 years after the events of King Kong and totally ignores the events of Son of Kong; in it Carl Denham and Jack Driscoll return to Skull Island and learn more about the history of Kong and the natives.

Now the rights to that novel have been snatched up and Neil Marshall, the wonderfully two-fisted filmmaker behind Centurion and The Descent and the Battle of the Blackwater in Game of Thrones, is set to direct the film version. He's writing along with Simon Utley. I haven't read the novel (yet) but I know that Neil Marshall has exactly the sort of pulpy attitude that I want to see in my King Kong movies. The big question is what the budget of this will be, and whether Universal is going to try to get involved. It would surely make them happier to have all Kong-related stuff under their roof, I imagine, and they can't legally shut this down. Better to lean into it .

I just wish he made more films, but maybe it's good that they are few and far between.

    Agreed.

The key is consistency now. In the older films he seemingly changed size based on the scenario they put him in and his scale was never "set".

Wow the trailer's incredible, it looks like the filmmakers carefully took their time with this movie. I have a feeling Kong: Skull Island will turn out to be what I wanted the recent Godzilla (2014) to be.

    kong-skull-island-poster-viral.jpg
    kong-skull-island-poster-viral-black-light.jpg

Coming Soon was one of a few sites that were sent a new KONG: SKULL ISLAND poster, which on the surface seemed like some cool, retro, viral poster. You know, not something that would actually get put up in a theater, but more something fun to circulate around the web. Well, the poster came with a note from MONARCH, (the fictional secret organization from 2014’s GODZILLA) which gave the hint to search the poster with a black light, and when done so reveals a series of notes scribbled onto the surface.

The real letter was signed by John Goodman's character, William Randa, a government official who accompanies the group into the jungle. To avoid having to squint super hard, here is what the revealed words say:

"His mouth is fire; his roar the floodwater; his breath is death. Enlil made him guardian of the Cedar Forest, To frighten off the mortal who would venture there. BUT WHO WOULD VENTURE THERE?”
Oooooh, so ominous! Could the monster or “guardian” they’re referring to be Kong? Is the massive monkey what the group in the movie is searching for? Will this lead to the epic showdown between Zilla and The Ape in the future? Why are secret organizations so secretive?! They act as if their name depends on it!

    Kong: Skull Island

I took my son to see Kong: Skull Island in IMAX 3D today at a matinee, and it was absolutely INCREDIBLE.. 3 hours of nearly solid Giant Monster Action. I highly recommend it. This is not another "Kong gets smitten with a chick, they drag him back to New York and shoot him off a building" movie.. this is a full-on giant monster brawl. The "skull-crawlers" were nasty formidable foes for both Kong and the people on the island.

The after-credit scene is worth hanging around for, as it sets things up for the next American Godzilla flick.

Anybody else check this flick out yet?
