Darjeeling Limited stands out as very Wes Anderson but very different than all of his other films. Visually it's still him but with only a hint of the surreal, in the watching grown-ups play dress-up or life sized diorama sense. It's the least fun, the least funny but still very good. It seems like the kind of thing he had to get out of his system or something. Death plays a part in most of his films but it's different here. There's a melancholy to all of his films but it's more like pure sadness in DL. The short film that precedes it featuring a thin but still oddly out-of-shape looking (think Miley Cyrus) Natalie Portman ass sets the tone for the feature to come.
Of his more surreal, I found Moonrise Kingdom to be somewhere between The Life Aquatic and Darjeeling Limited in terms of the fun:sadness ratio. I'm hoping that this latest film is back in the Rushmore and Royal Tennanbaums territory.
