http://badassdigest.com/2013/04/08/c...ns-production/Today is the first day of shooting on Captain America: The WInter Soldier, and the press release from Marvel contains some slight, but interesting, new information.
For one thing, the release confirms what I've heard from people close to the production: Marvel is playing the identity of The Winter Soldier as a reveal. Sort of. Here's the synopsis of the movie from the release:
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will pick-up where “Marvel’s The Avengers” left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.
No mention of The Winter Soldier. But then there's this bit of info about the cast:
Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” features an outstanding supporting cast that includes Sebastian Stan (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Black Swan”) as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie (“The Hurt Locker,” “Million Dollar Baby”) as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Cobie Smulders (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “How I Met Your Mother”) as Agent Maria Hill, Frank Grillo (“Zero Dark Thirty”) as Brock Rumlow and Georges St-Pierre (“Death Warrior”) as Georges Batroc.
Huh.
Anyway, the other piece of information I found interesting was the revelation of Robert Redford's character's full name: Alexander Pierce, "a senior leader within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization." There's a character named Alexander Pierce in the Marvel Comics continuity, but I doubt Redford is really playing this guy, who was Nick Fury's right hand man during the Nick Fury vs SHIELD miniseries, which saw Fury on the run from SHIELD after it was taken over by Deltites, exact replicas of people. These replicas are known, in the Marvel Universe, as Life Model Decoys - something joked about fleetingly in The Avengers. Could Pierce's presence be a sign that we're getting LMDs in The Avengers 2? I thought Pierce was going to be one of the shadowy cabal guys, but what if he's Nick Fury's one friend on the inside when Fury is forced to go on the run at end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier?
All speculation. Not speculation: some of the supervillains in this film will not have supervillain names. While Bucky and Sam Wilson/The Falcon both get their codenames added to their casting, Brock Rumlow and Georges St. Pierre do not. Rumlow is the civilian identity of baddie Crossbones, while Batroc is Batroc The Leaper. I'm sure Cap will make some comment about having to fight 'this Leaper' or something.
The image at the top of this article is the first official picture from Captain America: The WInter Soldier, but it looks to me like it's not from the film - unless there's a scene where Captain America is in a room full of c-stands. I like that Marvel just took a moment on set to snap a picture and send it out.
I really like these movies, despite me thinking Avengers was a teeeeeeeency bit overrated. I am still looking forward to this as I think that modern superhero flicks are pretty awesome, especially coming from Marvel.
