Starship Troppers Reboot

STARSHIP TROOPERS is one of those movies that you either love or hate. Paul Verhoeven's 1997 satire is a plentiful array of blood, guts, and boobs all wrapped up in a military satire. There is not a serious moment in the movie that doesn't have comedic undertones. But, that element was lost on many who didn't appreciate the movie for what it was. So, after multiple direct to home video sequels and animated takes on the story, STARSHIP TROOPERS is being rebooted as a big screen movie.

Zack Stentz, screenwriter on X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and STAR TREK 3, will be penning the new STARSHIP TROOPERS. Producer Toby Jaffe had previously compared the new movie in tone to MINORITY REPORT and said it would be less violent and comical than the Casper Van Dien starrer. Does Stentz have the same comparison?

Verhoeven's film is dark, scathing and hilarious.

But I am not surprised someone would try to dip into this well again. It's based on a book, so a fanbase must come out and see it. Right, ender's game and John Carter??

There's no point unless they make it an actual adaptation of the Heinlein book, which Verhoven's film was not. Given that the general public is even less aware (or caring) about who Heinlein is than Philip K. Dick you have to wonder why they even went with the name rather than just make a scifi film with a few elements from his book that they wouldn't have to pay a royalty on.

I read the book and it was good but not mind blowing. I liked Verhooven's extra satyrical take on it but I understand why they want a reboot. With this, RoboCop, and Total Recall I just want to know when they reboot Showgirls?

I read the book and it was good but not mind blowing.

I'm not a huge scifi reader, but I think his books are more mind blowing when you consider when they were written, given the overall naivete of the genre at the time. Since rights weren't being sold for such a long time Hollywood just stole concepts from his books for films. Then, ironically, when his books are finally being made into movies folks are like, "meh".

If I remember right, several of them had an underlying commentary on fascism, and, correct me if I'm wrong since you read all of it (I started reading but never finished), Starship troopers is no exception. This was what Verhoven was riffing on with his satire. Folks didn't "get it" with Heinlein and a lot of folks didn't "get it" with the Verhoven film.

In general, the American audience doesn't do so well with satire and irony that isn't slopping over with camp as well, ala Saturday Night Live, Colbert, etc. If you're not winking at the audience you must be talking down to them and being arrogant. Or so it goes.

The reboot, plus lower target rating, will let them get a toy line out of the franchise and exploit the now lukewarm interest in giant robots.

I just want to know when they reboot Showgirls?

It's so funny thinking of this as NC-17 now. Like, for what? The sex on mainstream HBO serials is often more explicitly simulated. I know they spent money on a vfx house doing touch ups, possibly so you couldn't fully resolve Berkley's genitalia. Again, HBO lets you at least see some definition and just avoids full-on gyno shots.
