A Field in England (2014)

The film follows three men who, after deserting battle during the English Civil War in 1864, are forced to assist an alchemist in search of buried treasure. However, when they stumble upon the titular field (and a circle of mushrooms), they suddenly find themselves entrenched in a struggle with sorcery and supernatural forces.

A lot of praise for this movie, which means it probably won't be good.
I'm not really into these psychedelic movies.

Maybe this is trying to be like Dead Man just like Kill List was a lame version of A Serbian Film.

This was excellent. I watched it a few months ago... some thoughts:

"Despite such a simple premise (civil war soldiers abandoning the confederacy), there is a lot on offer here. Mainly in the form of the psychedelic, and fractured nature which the story is told. Gorgeous black and white cinematography is punctuated with various visual devices, which Wheatley seems to be getting so good at deploying, particularly the slo-mo and cut-away scenes. The story itself is almost secondary to the overall tone of the film; really it could be about anything... this is more an experimental work, and is certainly open to interpretation. With A Field in England, Wheatley is certainly showing further promise as a film-maker, although his style still needs a little polishing here and there to be truly great, in my opinion. Despite that, he has proven that he has true passion for his craft and is not adverse to experimenting and playing with the avant-garde side of cinema, which most directors tend to avoid. Wheatley is not afraid to avoid 'playing it safe' and this film is truly a unique piece of work, and whether you love it or hate it, it's certainly worth your time.

I'd give it a solid 8/10 at present, although I know that without a doubt this one will stay with me for a while, and will certainly demand a re-watch or two in the near future."

Since writing that back in early September, I haven't managed to re-watch it yet. However, I did buy the Blu-ray from Amazon over Christmas so it will only be a matter of time before I will watch it again.

Such an amazing film. Scenes were brilliant, some just whirled around in my mind. So visual, so comfortable, so uncomfortable. I can't compare it to anything I've ever seen.

Yeah, this was awesome. A little hard to follow, but the scenes were shot perfectly and brought a lot of tension. Definitely a thinker type film, but great nonetheless
