Trailer is alright, does remind me of other horror flicks, though. I'll reserve judgement.

Does look similar to some other films that recently came out, but I like the name and the weird evil Dr. Seuss vibe.

This is playing at Sundance now and I was able to watch this today

What we have here is another slow-burn (borderline super slow-burn) movie that throws current horror flicks to the curb as it displays some absolutely amazing cinematography. Jennifer Kent makes her directing debut here and look out, this woman has a bright future!

The Babadook is a dark, brooding film that will keep you numbingly tense from beginning to end. There are many underlying currents here that stretch further than the the titular character and on some level they are actually more unnerving. But I won't go into that here.

Essie Davis is the lead here and she will be another to watch for. Her performance in this film is borderline perfection. The emotions she portrays in this mother's tortured mind and well being is truly remarkable. For fear of treading on a very fine line of spoilers I will refrain from saying more of what makes her performance here rather incredible.

As generic as the film may look to horror veterans it does indeed manage to throw a new angle into the mix. Something that is unnerving and adds to the overall unease of sitting and watching. And this is before The Babadook starts his antics.

I already plan on watching this again. The Babadook is in it's own right a masterpiece. It is a movie crafted with great care as it revels in Jennifer Kent's obvious passion for the genre.

The movie is downright creepy and dare I say it...scary. Of course there will be viewers that will scoff at that notion and have a rebuttal of not enough blood (almost none actually), or it was too slow. This flick being slow is how it SHOULD be done. It makes the viewers use their minds and think about it. It pulls you in and once you realize how engrossed you are with it that is when you will also notice you are quite uneasy.

I don't care what anyone else that see's it and replies to this thread says if they don't like it. I'm standing firm with my opinion and score. This film was made with an overabundance of care, love for the genre and finesse from the director's seat all the way down.

    8.5/10

I tried to stay away from that since the whole premise of the movie is almost one giant spoiler if I go into too much detail. I'm not into reviews, most go way to far and I don't really care about what scene in a movie others like. I keep what I review here quick and to the point. I concentrate on the film itself, how it is made, acting, etc. I will give a synopsis below in spoiler tags, something you can simply find in a Google search if you are so inclined to find out what this story is. What I provided, you wont find as I am fairly sure there aren't many reviews out for this one yet

    Spoiler...
It's about a mother and son that live alone after losing their father (shown in an opening sequence). A lot of the movie is focused on the strained relationship between the two until one night they read a tale...The Babadook.

The mood and feel of the film even before this is dark and uneasy. Reading from the book and the rhyme associated with the story comes off a little silly and humorous but quickly becomes more brooding and dark as The Babadook may very be real and looking "to get in".

From there on out the relationship between mother and son takes a roller coaster ride while the titular being seems ever more real and intent on getting what it wants.

With it playing at Sundance reviews are coming in. Currently 8 already on RT with 100% fresh rating!

    http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_babadook/

These two synopsis sum it up perfectly IMO:

The Babadook is a smart, respectful horror that puts character and emotional issues first, yet never at the cost of a delightful and haunting fright.
Its horrors go beyond any single raggedy phantom, reaching back to the primordial fear of death and loss: of a child, of a loved one, of one's own sense of self.

Great write up Mac. Although I haven't agreed with all of your reviews, I'm really hoping this one is as good as you say. For the atmosphere alone I want to see this movie. I hope you have't gotten me excited about nothing.
