Hopefully the Crazy Ones gets the axe. Terrible, typical, boring network TV and other reasons.

    1. Robin Williams hasn't been funny in years. He should explore more dark roles like he did at times in the last decade. Freeing him up from a show that's going nowhere would do just that.

    2. Sarah needs to wake up (stop being in denial) and stop screwing over all her castmates and Joss Whedon (at times) who have shown interest in bringing Buffy back one last time in a movie. I get that she doesn't want to be known for just THAT role and she thinks shes too old for the part now. However sometimes that's the way that business works. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. She should play the character again before she really is too old to do it physically and too fugly looking to be believable anymore. If it weren't for that role and Cruel Intentions, she'd probably still be doing Mabelline commercials.

The problem with this is she's a bitch. She was a total bitch back when all she had was Buffy, and trying to break into cinema and in all likelihood she's an even bigger bitch now with the resentment of knowing all anyone cares about is Buffy Sommers.

If you look back on all the marketing materials for the original series, she never did appearances and rarely even appeared in promotional photos alongside her cast mates. Sometimes with Angel, sometimes with Spike, but practically never with "The Scooby Gang".

She is (or was, dunno), however, fairly generous to fans in public and convincingly cordial. I had two such encounters with her, one where my GF and I just observed her at an AMC theater interacting with a gushing fan and about a year later in New York where we met her at the premiere party for Godzilla while she was on location for Cruel Intentions (she was at the party with Ryan and Reese). She was very nice to my GF who had to get a picture with her idol, Buffy Sommers.

But a few years later Sean Patrick Flannery revealed to folks on the set of The Insatiable that he'd never worked with a bigger bitch in his entire career, describing what it was like on Vanilla Fog.

She hasn't been aging well for a while. They had to do digital work on her chest for the Scooby Doo movies. "Chicken chest" was one of the problems I believe. She's been too thin since the last couple seasons of Buffy.

All of this is probably 100% accurate.

To lend more evidence to that theory is Jeff Pruitt, who was the stunt coordinator on Buffy for several seasons. He has his own youtube account and he's been posting home videos here and there of his time working on Buffy. Most of the footage was never seen in any of the documentaries of the show. Only some of it actually, and its very raw. He occasionally features the cast in his home movies but its mostly the crew and Sophia, SMG's stunt double.

Anyway long rant short. He comments on some of his videos and gives sometimes elaborate descriptions. He more or less described working on the early seasons of the show as very laid back and fun, before everybody became big stars with egos to go with them. So I would absolutely buy into the idea that SMG became unbearable as the seasons went on. Afterall, she was the only reason the show stopped. Whedon had more to go, as evidenced by the comic contuations, but Gellar wanted a 'break' and just out of it.

What Jeff had to say in one description.

During season 2 we were trying to promote the show so I had various crew and cast members talk to the camera directly to the fans. This was a time before anyone was a star and nobody was the god of his own universe yet. There was no infighting or jealousy among crew members. Everybody supported each other's work. The thing that strikes me most looking back at this (aside from how young we all are) is how innocent it was then; a much different atmosphere than in later high pressure years of the show.

Oh man, thanks for posting these. Back then, this was my favorite show. It's still my favorite show on so many levels. It was really disappointing to find out she wasn't a very nice person to work with. I think she did a lot of great character stuff on the show so I'm happy to just enjoy it.

"The Wish", one of my favorites. The scene where we see Buffy die, I get goosebumps just thinking about it. And to this day, I think I've only been able to make myself watch "The Body" the one time all the way through. Just thinking about that one and I get a lump in my throat. I didn't even want anything to do with this show in the first season, having caught a little of the movie but a friend nearly pulled a Ludoveco on me and made me watch the pilot and first couple episodes and that was it, I was hooked and unlike any other show besides maybe the X-Files, those nights were sacred and nothing interfered with me getting my weekly fix.

Wow. I must have been living in a cave...I have no idea she was such a bitch. But now it makes sense why Buffy ended when everyone seemed to want to keep it going. And it makes sense as to why she fell off the face of the planet.

Have their been any rumors as to what she's like on the new show (which I, strangely enough, enjoy)?

It was my first lesson in being careful about associating a character with the person playing them or wanting to know about the lives of actors. Sometimes you're pleasantly surprised but be prepared to be disappointed. When it comes to folks always cast as bad guys and heavies it seems to work the opposite. Acting is being really good at lying after all. Lying with your whole body and emotion.

The presence of Robin Williams kept me further than arm's length from the new show, as curious as I was about whether SMG was good or not. I can't stand him unless it's going to be another role like his creepy photomat guy.

I felt the same way you did.

Didn't really give the show a chance back in the day/the 90s. Until two years ago, I decided to revisit it completely and my opinion changed on the show. I pretty much cared about all the characters throughout the show. Including the ones that were pretty much hated all the way through like Dawn and Riley. Whedon had a way of allowing you to care about all the characters on the show at one time or another. Which is rare, which he also did a good job with in the Angel spinoff.

It's easily Whedon's best work, probably because he was most passionate about it. In every interview he's ever given about the show, you can tell it was his life's passion. Probably also the reason why I don't really like much else the guy has done, because everything else he's done doesn't really come close IMO. Including the Avengers, which I finally watched recently.

No doubt SMG gave a lot of life to the character, all the more reason why its disappointing to find out that she was difficult to deal with as it went on.

What I would say though, for a lack of budget or they wanted to sell the creep factor. That first season comes off as genuinely creepy, in a 90s way of course, but the 90s style music/almost 80s synth feeling at times, combined with the film they used in the first couple seasons to give it that grainy look, it really gave that first season a creep factor.

Paul Gleason immediately comes to mind. Always known for playing the prick douchbag in a lot of his memorable flicks. Breakfast Club, Die Hard notably. Word on the street was that he was a great guy and very well liked in real life. Died from the Meso back in '06.

Absolutely. The first two seasons were shot on 16mm, so it's got more texture. The cameras were lighter as well and smaller, so that could also be a factor. I'm betting the lenses they used contributed to the look having a bit more character, since they were likely older which would alter the way the light would fall off. 16mm stocks are cut down from 35mm stocks but I bet when the show jumped to 35mm in Season 3 they were using one of the low-con stocks Kodak made for TV, like a lot of shows on FOX. Those TV stocks are just dreadful.

As seasons progressed, aesthetics were never a major factor. Whedon never showed a real knack for aesthetics on television in his series (beyond the first couple seasons of Buffy) all the way through Firefly being fairly bland. You watched for the writing and characters. This was a big worry for me with The Avengers because Serenity, much as I enjoyed it, didn't feel different enough from the TV show. As great as some of the previous Marvel films were, visually, especially Captain America, I was surprised when The Avengers actually looked like a movie. He must have just totally deferred to his DP.
