Thumbs up Val Lewton horror films

I was never really into 1940s horror except for the Universal stuff, but recently I watched Cat People and The Seventh Victim and I started getting into it. These are important films in the evolution of the genre.

Invented the 'Lewton Bus' jump scare effect:

This is a pretty morbid film for its time, concerning a devil worshipping cult..

The shower scene is an interesting precursor to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.

They're both good if you like noirish mystery/horror films.

    Will be watching more soon.

Agreed. Love his low budget horror films.

Not much zombie action in this, more of a psychological melodrama with voodoo. Reminded me a bit of White Zombie. Good ending, though.

I never found the voodoo zombies scary or threatening in anyway. Wasn't until Romero introduced the modern day zombie in '68 that they became terrifying to me.

In the voodoo zombie flicks, the horror was more about becoming a zombie than being killed by a zombie.
