Well one word comes to mind with this...and that word is "bad". Outside of the cast the movie is trying to throw every cliche in the book at the viewer while making it different, to put it simply...it fails.
We start off with the words "Based on true events."
This flick is about a Professor Coupland doing a paranormal experiment on a girl played by Oliva Cooke. For filler of course he has to have some help so he takes three other students with him. Sound familiar???? Even the still for the trailer I linked looks back to The Haunting In Connecticut.
If you already have a cookie cutter, insert it here and you now know the rest of the movie...with a pinch of extreme boredom.
For some reason at points the movie changes perspective to that of one of the characters video camera in what I am guessing is to immerse the audience to have that "being there" feeling. But it is pulled off clumsily and actually does the opposite while making the shaky cam of Blair Witch look like it was on smooth rails.
At times the movie comes off more like a Session 9 than a typical ghost/haunting one but that's not a good thing because once again the execution is terrible and by this point you wont give a shit if it is real or not.
Boring, crammed with jump scares that simply don't work and the changing of perspectives for reasons I cannot imagine make this a movie that will test seasoned horror fans to stick with it until the end.
+ Very good, promising cast.
- Yawn, here we go again.
- Unnecessary changing of perspective.
- Highly predictable to the point of genuine moments of deja vu.
