    As Above, So Below (2014)

Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers ventures into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror, As Above, So Below reaches deep into the human psyche to reveal the personal demons that come back to haunt us all.

Looks like a mediocre psychological horror film. To me, it reminds me of The Descent, just with demons. Will probably watch this when it hits Netflix.

I'm intrigued just because of the setting, looks like it might be good though.

I've actually been to the catacombs in Paris and I recognize the parts in the beginning as basically the part that you are allowed to see and visit, which is a very small portion relative to the enormity of the catacombs, and it is impossible to really get lost or access any unintended areas from there (as far as I know) but hey it's a movie. It does show them entering through some obscure means in the train tunnel but once inside it is clearly the touristy part.

Definitely a creepy ass place though.

Right off the bat I have a problem with the title, the wording is awkward. Probably just the writer part of me being nit-picky but it does seem out of place. As for the trailer, I agree it looks kinda "Meh".

It at least has a chance of being better than 2007 "Catacombs" featuring Pink =p

They should have contacted Behemoth and seen about getting them for theme song to the film

I'll get right to the point and say I didn't like it and this treads an awfully fine line of even being considered a horror film.

The film crew actually had access and filmed in locations within the catacombs. If you have seen documentaries or anything else about them the "coolness" factor will wear off fairly quick. However from what I understand (and for obvious reasons) only certain scenes were filmed in the location.

Now, after seeing this I am fairly certain I would not classify this as a straight up horror flick. It has a bit of an action/adventure undertone to it that cannot be denied. I kept thinking of Tomb Raider, this could easily have been titled Scarlet: Search For the Philosopher's Stone. Booby traps abound we are only missing the Indiana Jones amazing musical score to call this a full fledged action/adventure.

...and here we go again with the shaky, found footage point of view which gets highly annoying given it is shot in such a badass location and yet here we are watching it through a shaky camera (HD cameras strapped on everyone's head).

On the other hand the sound is fantastic. The theater had this bad boy cranked up and the entire time it sounded like I was down in the catacombs with them. Dripping water, whispers, some moans and I even think I heard some sort of chanting. The sound was engulfing and mesmerizing, which in my opinion is where all the creepiness and unease (what little there is) originates from.

The pacing is pretty much a problem but not for being too slow but for being too fast. The movie runs along at a breakneck speed which detracts from just about everything they are trying to accomplish. Each character faces their "inner demons" and when one becomes a casualty the group seems to pay no mind and keeps moving forward. The film preaches that going down is actually going up however to me it seemed like they weren't going anywhere but in circles! I have no idea what illusion if any they were aiming for but it doesn't work.

In the end, our movie here with the daughter of Indiana Jones searching for this mystical stone comes up with a final twist that well...will make you question your own sanity of why you sat through it.

    5/10

    Amazing sound.
    Awesome location filming.
    Shitty everything else.
    A horror film...really?

I liked the Alchemy and two of everything concept along with the claustrophobic setting, but aside from that it's just another run-of-the-mill found footage flick. Mediocre scares and all the facing your fears/inner demons thing has been done to death. Didn't care much for any of the characters either. 5/10

Meh, this could have been much better considering the setting. I also couldn't stand the heroine, Scarlett. 4.5/10 for me.

This movie was an abortion in terms of writing and creativity. The rating system isn't applicable.

A 23 year old American college student fixed the Notre Dame bells that haven't rung in over 300 years.

Scarlett found a mirror.. that symbolised that the Philosopher's Stone was within her all along.

An Aramaic message on a stone tablet that was thousands of years old translated to a cliche riddle.. that could be read in perfect English.
