Says the guy who likes Masters of the Universe, lol. It has romantic comedy production value because realism wouldn't have fit with the tone of the film, or rather, its lack of production value doesn't really distract from what it's all about which is the script and characterizations.

Pretty much everything looks fake in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films and Avatar compared to better films in their respective genres, only they're actually worse for it because they don't have good scripts or much of any reason besides production value to watch them.

Ok, I respect your opinion, but I just don't get the love for this film. I've tried twice to watch it, and I just can't see it. Maybe it's me.

I'm glad to see someone mentioned Dragonslayer... I consider it one of the absolute best dragon movies ever made.. I truly feel that the dragon fx have held up nicely, considering how old the movie is.. Vermithrax is one fuckin' mean lookin' bitch of a dragon.

Vermithrax Pejorative is still the "gold standard" of movie dragons and the most recent Hobbit movie has done nothing to change that. There are times where the photographic limitations of the stop/go motion technique is visible, as well as the method of optical compositing, but these technical issues don't change the amazing performance and life breathed into the creature by Phil Tippet. Just amazing. And it's also the coolest looking dragon design of any film to this date.

The full-size dragon sections are also very well done and besides a bit more range of motion and performance there isn't as big of a difference between these scenes and the hydraulic T-Rex from Jurassic Park as one might expect (because the evolution of these techniques has just crept along in slow increments, unfortunately. The incremental, single-order improvement in the T-Rex over Vermithrax is damping at the beginning and ending of movement impulse, an approximation of "slow-in, slow-out").

Phil Tippett is just a godly animator, regardless of technique. What brings such life into his (and Harryhausen's) work isn't so much the fact that it's stop motion (or go motion) but straight-ahead rather than pose-to-pose. This is why the CG dinosaurs in the first JP are better than the later films, even if the later films are more technically advanced. Tippett and his crew animated most of them via straight-ahead techniques where most digital animators at ILM and elsewhere use pose-to-pose.

Straight-ahead is better for complex, truer to life movement but it requires an entirely different mindset. This is why the "bugs" in Starship Troopers are also amazingly alive. It's the technique within the technique.

What's so bad about it? The cast is likeable. It has great special effects. It has a charm to it. Yeah, it's a movie based on toys, but it's way better than the Transformers movies. It's not even a guilty pleasure for me, it sits proudly in my dvd collection.

It's just a dopey kids' movie, which doesn't hold up. MOTU Trivia The Restaurant where Courtney Cox character works at, is the location where Rodney King was beaten by LAPD

That weird tidbit came up in this interview with the film's production designer. There's also some cool concept art for sets and characters that would never pop up in a cheapo Cannon film. http://www.motumovie.com/2010/06/q-w...r-william.html

They were kinda smart setting it in our world, saving on budget. It's just so silly though. For kids, sure, maybe, but even as a kid I had no interest. My little brothers did. But that's true for the toys too. When I was eleven I saw them as "kid stuff" and for little kids. Star Wars toys was my thing, my brother that was about seven did GI Joe and the five year old played with He-Man. That's what I associated with everything about that franchise.

I remember it premiering on HBO and being forced to watch it. As a kid I rolled my eyes, a lot. But I already knew enough to know someone never told Frank Langela he didn't have to swing for the fences on this one but he did anyhow. I guess he's just that pro. Too bad the writer, director and producers had lesser plans.

I think this game was born out of the fantasy explosion of the 80s (although I know Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons came first).
