So, last night a few friends and myself went and seen the Angry Video Game Nerd movie. The plot is as follows..
"The AVGN must overcome his phobia of the worst video game in the world to save his fans."
And that's all you need to know. It would also help going to www.cinemassacre.com and looking at his various reviews. He takes a lot of fan-favorite dialogue and throws it in this film. It's pretty genius.
The acting is horrible
The plot sucks
The effects are wretched
..but that's what makes this insanely fun. Everything is exaggerated. The acting is seriously piss. It's one of the worst acted films I have ever seen, but if you're watching this for the acting then you are in the wrong theater. Every line is presented terribly, but the script is fucking hilarious. I don't mind seeing a general who's screaming all the time. This film is filled with cliche characters, but damn it was it funny. This is as low budget as you can get and I think that was the best way to make this film
If you are caught up with the Angry Video Game Nerd game reviews, you'll know that he has been putting off reviewing ET for a while. Well, this film shows the Angry Video Game Nerd is a worldwide phenomenon (which isn't far from the truth). A video game company called "Cockburn Inc." is releasing a sequel to ET because gamers nowadays play games so bad, that they are good. So, they want James (the AVGN) to review it to help profits. It's a cool little story that adds twists and turns to every scene
The effects were my favorite part. If anyone was following James on the making of this film, he did all the effects personally. Most of them were done in his basement. Often times you'll see people in cars going over cliffs when it's really just a toy car getting caught on fire. It's addicting and extremely fun to see all these horrible effects. They are horrible to the average film goer, but when it comes to someone like my friends and me, then you see the true talent and dedication doing ALL of the effects yourself. There is a scene with a rocket launching and when James was explaining it in a video, he says that it caused so much smoke in his basement that the fire alarm went off. At 3am the firemen showed up waking up his wife and baby and he apologized completely. But then the firemen saw all of his games in his basement that they stayed for over an hour talking. Then his wife came downstairs and gave James "the look" and they all left. Pretty humorous stuff, but this is why this movie is a gem. This film was years in the making and that's all because James' hard work doing everything.
He set up a Kickstarter originally and wanted 75,000 bucks, but received over 200k. With the leftovers, he bought himself a new house. A lot of people are up in arms about that, but when you see the movie, you'll realize that he used the maximum amount of money for this film. Everything in this film is terrible, but EXTREMELY fun to watch. When I say terrible, I mean so incredibly cheesy that it's fucking AMAZING. There are so many cameos from other internet celebrities like the NES Punk and the Nostalgia Critic (who was actually there last night and gave a little speech in the theater before the film). Whenever they appeared on screen the whole audience laughed and clapped and cheered. So incredible to be in a sold-out room because we all love the Angry Video Game Nerd.
I honestly think this movie is a 9/10. The dedication is extremely high and I loved everything about it. Only downside is some annoying characters (like the main side kick of the film), but other than that, flawless. James is a terrible actor but kept up his internet personality with perfection. Below I list some of his videos, along with Nostalgia Critic because I feel like he should be recognized more. He has pretty much the same cult following as the AVGN. He posts amazing film reviews and is an overall nice guy.
So, watch the clips and go see the movie now if it's playing in a theater near you!
