Really good film. Most storytellers that try to be "original" with werewolves fail miserably. If you want to take the point of view that all monsters are subtext for some other deep seated psychological or social issue then this is a very good tweak.
The werewolf in the end is laughable but the film itself is good enough that this budget+designer shortcoming can be overlooked. I'd much rather watch a good film with a bad werewolf than see a good werewolf in a bad film.
I really enjoyed how funny the sequel was and how Perkins' character continued to grow and evolve. The asylum setting was good and creepy. I didn't care for the third installment and shut it off about a third in because I was so bored and nothing about it as a period piece seemed to be working. Was it time travel, was it alternate universe...I didn't end up caring.

I really liked the first film, but didn't care much for the sequels.

The sequel and prequel were the worst. Completely lost the vibe of the first film.

It's an OK movie for me. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. The best recent werewolf movie for me is Late Phases

I liked that they took the sequel entirely someplace different. There would be no sequel with the vibe of the first and no reason to try for that and fail. The tonal shift made it it's own thing. Sorta like if you want to compare Aliens directly to Alien, it's shit. Appreciating Aliens for what it is, however, with its tonal shift and sub-genre shift away from trying to be what Alien was and it's very good.
Sequels that don't bring anything new to the table or follow the formula of the original are one of the single biggest problems with horror films.

I have to give Ginger Snaps another shot. I remember not liking it, but that was 5 years ago that I watched it. I like Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle as well.

I liked Ginger Snaps.. any movie that tries to bring something original to the table usually catches my fancy or at the very least causes me to pay more attention. Using the duality and double meanings to retell the classic werewolf legend to coincide with female puberty was a stroke of genius. I agree about the sequels and prequels though.. not as interesting.. started to fall into the tried and failed tropes of lesser werewolf flicks.

I dig it a lot. Looking forward to upgrading to the new Scream Factory blu ray at some point.
