    It Follows (2014)

For 19-year-old Jay, fall should be about school, boys and weekends out at the lake. But after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she finds herself plagued by strange visions and the inescapable sense that someone, or something, is following her. Faced with this burden, Jay and her teenage friends must find a way to escape the horrors that seem to be only a few steps behind.

My taste in horror flicks has changed in the past few years. I like movies that make you use your brain a bit. I'm not for all the gung-ho in your face crap at this point. I still watch stuff like that but if I take the time to sit and watch a movie now I like to be absorbed by a film and not merely watch one.

I'm definitely interested but with the hype it's already getting, I hope I don't get Babadook-ed again .

ok so i saw a press screening of this during the week. Thought i'd come give you guys my thoughts...

To summarising the story without spoilers, our main character Jay begins dating a new guy, who, in the early stages of their courtship, they have sex. He then tells her he has passed something on to her which will follow her until it eventually kills her, before leaving her terrified and to basically deal with this information. Quite quickly she sees that he was not lying and the rest of the film follows her trying to run away from what is following her with the support of her group her friends and her sister. Basically without spoilers that is the story.

It Follows has a very late 70's/80s horror vibe to it and reminded me of The Shining and Halloween as well as of the recent The Guest in terms of it paying homage to that sort of 80's vibe. They never define the era which is pretty interesting so if i sound like im giving a wide spec on this you can see if you agree.

ok so its got the scares- a few jumps but generally a more slow burning tension unnerving feeling to it. It doesnt have much in the way of gore (although one scene comes as a bit of a shock) but as some of you will know from my previous comments im not exactly a gore fan (unless a good story goes along with it) so those who are more into this might be disappointed.

the acting is fine, the runtime is just about right.
There is undeniably a message similar to contracted and afflicted that there i caution to be had with casual sex, and what follows her could be interpreted as a warning about Aids/STI's.

negatives- The characters like many horror film cliches do things that absolutely noone would do (my colleague got really irritated at this, said he felt like shouting at the sceen "dont be so stupid!" but he isnt a fan of the genre!) I was a little disappointed that, and i going to word this carefully to avoid spoilers, i original thought (possibly wrongly so) from the trailer that the film would leave a little more ambiguity to her predicament.I also felt at times it did get a little repetitive.

overall however i liked it. I found my heart was racing a little although i wasnt out and out terrified. It wasnt overly predictable and has a lot of ambiguity to elements of it so like myself and my colleague u will come away from it and probably differ in you interpretation of it. I would recommend it although i do think some might be disappointed that the hype surrounding it imo wasnt completely met. 6/10

Saw this last night and I have to say it is very mediocre. Those looking for another indie, slow-burn gem like The Babadook should look elsewhere. The filming is good, the performances are above average and believable but the movie is missing elements to keep it interesting and not boring.

At about the 45 minute mark I was hoping "It" caught up to her so it could end, watching the movie went from interesting to a chore rather quickly. Another weird perk is I have no idea what time period this movie is set in. Nothing gives that way and as previously stated above this flick has the feeling of the 80's to it.

Too much left up for the viewer to decide, pacing issues, and not much to lean on I give this a 5/10. A low 5 though.

Movie seems to be getting a lot of praise from critics for whatever reason. I'm just annoyed that it's not playing anywhere near me

Yeah it is, thus my hopes were very high. Could be a classic case of over-hype but I found this to be a snoozefest and uninteresting. Perhaps I was just over-tired and the previous bad work week lingered into the weekend. Depending on what others here think I might give it a another try.

Movie was definitely overhyped. I give it points for originality, but aside from that it's not the great horror film that a lot of critics and fans make it out to be. I personally liked The Babadook better. Will have a more detailed review posted soon.

Hated The Babadook and was worried this was just gonna be another case of the fanbase blowing it out of proportion. I ended up enjoying it a lot for the film's style and score, but the story was problematic and I hated how they tried to set up a whole mythology and then failed to explain anything.

My take on this is simple: It sucked. They tried very hard to be a homage to 80s horror and failed. The score was too loud and, often, out of place. There were plot holes everywhere and inconsistencies in writing, acting, and directing. It completely failed to scare and hardly succeeded to retain my interest on any level.

This film wasn't even all style over substance. It was just all hype.

But that's my opinion. There are a lot of people out there who really liked it.

I agree completely. I don't get the praise for it. I have seen better movies that I never heard of with one star reviews on Netflix

Girlfriend and I enjoyed the hell out of it. It wasn't scary, but I thought it was executed well. The acting was iffy, but it starred nobodies, so I don't really care. Otherwise, I thought the ending was a bit Inception-y. I didn't mind it though. I'd probably give it a 7/10

Just because it didn't bring anything new to the table doesn't mean it sucked.
