Some of the flicks listed aren't exactly "witch" flicks, but really more like witch/devil worship hybrids. The 2 groups are not the same - although often enough not that far removed. If we're going that route i'm throwing Race With the Devil into the mix.

In reality, true but movies have rarely made this distinction. This is one of the prime reasons why The Conjuring (and by extension the Warrens) is bullshit, if you try to place it (or the Warrens) in anything but a fictional context. As a product of their times, fine. But it makes the classic conflation of witches, in the most basic American connotation of the word, with Satanism and that's something that mostly exists in movies or the minds of conservatives.

Rosemary's Baby is a definite hybrid and a product of the times. The old folks worship Satan but they practice witchcraft and that makes it not even a slight stretch to include it in the thread. They were witches. All ritual magick is synonymous or equivalent to witchcraft, as is voodoo. Not all witches worship Satan, especially if they're wicca, but if you're a Satanist who practices ritual magick you are a witch, plain and simple.

Whether or not Satanism is involved in any of the flicks I listed, they all feature ritual magick in practice and therefore depict witchcraft and therefore witches.

I don't think it's necessarily semantics. If you are practicing magick you are a witch. That's just a basic fact. Without trying to be a jerk about it, though Satanism features heavily in a film like Rosemary's Baby the Satanists in the film are by definition witches, because they practice witchcraft, which is separate from their Satanism, which is a religion and state of mind which influences why and how they practice their witchcraft but, besides that, they're also referred to as witches multiple times and described as a coven. "All Of Them Witches" is a central plot device. In truth there's more witchcraft in that film than than in something like Pumpkinhead . A lot of audiences simply focus on the Satanism part because a majority of people are simple bitches who don't like to think about the media they consume.

Whether a film should be considered a "witch" movie should have more to do with how much the movie features or the plot revolves around the practice of witchcraft, including spell casting, hexing, cursing and other forms of ritual magick. If a Satanist/Witch movie is a hybrid then so is a Wicca/Witch movie, like The Craft. Wicca isn't more "pure" witch, it's a religion, just like Satanism or Voodoo or Santaria, gypsy magic or various forms of primitive shamanism, etc. What religion you may or may not be practicing while being a witch is a secondary concern.

I figured you were probably looking for the simple straight up ground floor level "witch" flick angle alone. That being said... Craven's Stranger in Our House (1978) is purely that from what I remember. Been a few years though.

Valid observations, but you're preaching to the choir really. Pretty much know all of that, but the point of the post was about the assumption of what road Lok was going down in starting the thread, and I was only trying to make a simple, ground floor distinction about the two without getting overly complicated about it.
