I'm sort of 50-50 on this. While Alien 3 was a flawed film, I loved the ending and feel the film as a whole get's more shit than it deserves. though at the same time I'm hoping Blomkamp uses some of the original Alien 3 script ideas with Ripley, Newt, and Hicks being stuck on a hostile planet when the aliens show up and only they know how to kick some xenomorph ass.

I am excited but it feels like he might be making a pretty big leap off of this quote:
I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens, so it’s Alien, Aliens and then this film.
To me that can be taken in a variety of ways. We also have to deal with the fact that Sigourney and Mr. Biehn are a good deal older as I presume their characters would be as well. Maybe it's more clear in the actual interview, but they all seem to be taken down from what I can see.

I know it would be hard to do a sequel to Alien Resurrection. Still, I love those films (Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection). Each Alien movie is different. Everyone seems to want a rehash of Aliens.

I can't wait! I hope Hicks and Newt both come back. I personally kinda liked Alien 3 myself and the longer cut is really good, I still think it's a good idea to pretend the last two films don't exist

Always hated them killing him and Newt off in Alien 3, hopefully they brush those films off as dreams while in cryosleep, or just ignore them entirely and don't bring clones back into the story.

Hmm, I'm in the minority of liking Alien 3 and the death of Newt and Hicks felt fine. I don't shy from tragedy and figure at least they went out in their sleep. It would have been a muddled story with the three of them running around in the prison. I like that Ripley is reduced to nothing and dependent on nobody in such a dangerous, hostile environment, with or without the xenomorph. Besides whatever availability issues (not to mention aging problems) they might have run into it made her story stronger and since Cameron had basically forced this into being about her that was necessary. I only didn't like the very end, but then it was the "bastard son of a thousand maniacs" as far as scripts go, being it was mashed together from several scripts and Fincher did the best he could with what he was given, being it didn't matter what sort of hot shot commercial director he was he was never in true control of that film.

I am so god damn excited for this film. Whether they disregard 3 and 4 or not. I did like the story for the third, but I liked the effects for the fourth. So..

I have to say with how awful 4 is I like the aliens effects and design the best in that film, minus the shitty hybrid at the end.

Retconning 3 & 4 is a cheap and lazy copout. Seems people just want a remake of Aliens.

For me I would like it to feel more like Alien than Aliens. Dark, unpredictable, sense of dread. I'm not looking for action sci-fi.

Well with Neil Blomkamp you know exactly what you're getting. It won't have the tone of Alien or Alien 3, which were just that (dark, unpredictable, sense of dread). I'm more of a horror fan than an action fan.

I'm not writing that off just yet. He already is showing passion for Alien so I will await to see what he does before judging it. We can hope...right?

Both Alien 3 & Resurrection were both good films. Although I did feel sort of cheated when they killed off Hicks and Newt the way they did, but some stories are like that, and I accepted it. Have no idea what they could be considering as a fitting end to the franchise, but I'll keep an open mind to another film.

Alien Resurrection has a terrible script by Joss Whedon but the visuals alone save that movie. Not half as good as Jean Pierre Jeunet/Marc Caro's The City of Lost Children, though.

Foreign directors don't do their best, if good at all, work for the US corporate studios. Generally. Jeunet was so inappropriate for this franchise it's not even funny. He was a bigger mismatch than Clooney or Kilmer to Batman. He's a bigger mismatch to this material than doing a live action Frozen adaptation starring Lindsay Lohan.

I'm not really convinced that Blomkamp isn't going to be equally mismatched. I mean, he's got the corporate/fascist commentary down that's totally appropriate for Weyland+Yutani and all that but he needs to be mad about more than that or it gets boring.

That's because they know that Hollywood just make films for mass consumption with little artistic integrity.

More like it doesn't matter what awards they have or what kind of bigshot they are in their home country, over here they've got no real clout or leverage. They don't get final cut. They're for hire directors given the script that they're going to make.

They're hired by people who don't understand the films that they've made in their native countries or what makes them unique, only that they've read their name in the trades, usually related to a film festival or some rare bird of a foreign language film released to art house theaters that do respectable business. They're an acquisition that perceptually raises the artistic street cred of the studio, regardless of the lack thereof in the films themselves (see: Aja + Piranha), while preventing their competition from getting them.

Once acquired they're generally not allowed to do what they did to get recognized in the first place. It's absurdly ironic.

I think it's crap that they're ignoring not one, but TWO whole films. I was initially excited about this news, but that part just doesn't sit right with me. I can feel my childhood being eaten away...as if from acid.
